Mitski

Anyone going to The Village Underground gig tomorrow or seen her on her current tour?

I keep checking the tour schedule every so often on the off-chance that she sneaked a Birmingham date in there but, alas, there is no such date. :frowning:

Seeing her in Edinburgh on Friday. Quite excited to see her again!

@BMS1 - here’s last nights setlist from her Brighton show:

Show spoilers:

Looks like she played most of Puberty 2 and Bury Me at Makeout Creek. With the main set being backed with a band whilst she performed solo for the encore just like last years gig at The Dome.

Mitski at Mohawk in Austin, Texas earlier tonight. A thinly veiled brag that I’m in Austin and went to a Mitski gig tonight.

What was the setlist like BMS1? Any new material?

There were some songs I didn’t recognise. I’m not sure if they were new or from her earlier albums. It was just her and an acoustic guitar all set. Worked well. The gig was one of those where the venue adds (or detracts) to the evening. Mohawk is a brilliant outdoor venue with tiered standing platforms. I haven’t been to a venue like it before.

That was the Hamilton Leithauser gig there the night before. A great venue.

Ah I see! I imagine it must have been great hearing some stripped back versions? Especially after last years full band set at The Dome.

She did delve a bit more into her back catalogue when I saw her play in Edinburgh in March. Playing a fair chunk of Bury Me At Makeout Creek…

The Mohawk looks and sounds like an awesome venue too! Have you anymore gigs lined up whilst you’re in Austin?

I’ve got a ticket for Besnard Lakes on Friday. I’m not a massive fan, seen them once ages ago at The Cargo I think but as they’re playing and I’m here, I may as well see them. Then a Cupcakke gig on Saturday. On Sunday is the big one of Brian Wilson playing Pet Sounds in full. I saw him do the 40th anniversary in 2006 and so looking forward to that hugely. Nothing booked for tonight but despite it being a small city there are a lot of bars/venues compacted in 6th Street and Red River Street where Mohawk is.

Sounds like you’ve got a jam packed trip! The Pet Sounds show in particular sounds like it’ll be very special. I’m not overly familiar with the other two bands though I did see you mention Cupcakke in April’s album of the month thread. What do they sound like?

Austin really does sound great! Would absolutely love to get over there for SXSW one day…

Cupcakke is a female rapper that goes by that name/moniker. Her album was a fun in your face rap album. It’s not ground-breaking but is great fun to listen to and something slightly different from my usual ubiquitous indie rock choices. Worth checking out.

Cool cool, I’ll give it a go! Cheers for the recommendation and enjoy the rest of your break!

I worked in Minnesota for two week a couple of years ago. Purity Ring played Stubbs in Austin when I was there and I was tempted to fly down and attend. Looked into flights/hotels etc…but it became too tricky to organise on top of the fairly busy trip anyway. Almost wish I had though.

I’ve never been to Austin before but came here on a semi-whim. It’s a place I’ve wanted to go to but so were Seattle and San Francisco. It was my love of a film called Slacker that may have swayed it in Austin’s favour. Some good gigs during my week here but I missed The New Pornographers that played Stubb’s a few days before arriving and I gave away tickets that I had for TNP for The Electric Ballroom to mates as I was flying in that day. Stubb’s looks great. Although I’ve only walked passed it when it’s closed as it’s near my hotel. Barracuda looks good too from photos. I’ve a gig there tomorrow/technically today. I’m slightly drunk at a venue called The Sidewinder currently watching a random band. They’re ok. I should head back to the hotel as I’ve a cycling tour booked later.

I am jealous. Have you tried any of the famous Bbq places?

Part of the reason I ended up not going was the internal flights were not too expensive to begin with but quickly became much more.

Also the neurotic part of me imagined some accident or disaster happening and a massive fuss over why my naked corpse had been found in a ditch 3000 miles away from where I should have been.

Didn’t realise there was a Mitski thread. Not so much my thing but saw them in February and it was great, recommended to anyone with a passing interest for this vein of music, would definitely see them again!

Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

I had BBQ at one place but not at famous places like Stubb’s or Franklin’s. I walked passed Franklin’s yesterday morning at around 9am and saw the 50 metre line of people waiting for it to open at 11am. I grabbed a coffee at the stand next to it and people watched but didn’t have the time or patience to join them. They seemed to be enjoying themselves though and came prepared with deck chairs and many were playing cards with each other.
