Mogwai are one of those really amazing bands. Consistently good. It just seems to me that when they get into the studio magic happens everything gels together that’s what I feel listening to them. Not many bands have that chemistry. Even their weaker albums have 2-3 gems. I love their track titles too. I think they have to be one of my favourite bands of the last 20 years.

I don’t know, with their last few albums proper they feel very hit and miss. Remurdered is up there in the top 5/7 things they’ve ever done IMO. But sometimes I feel like what they’re going for on paper is a lot more enticing than the end product. And (even though one of the most persistent criticisms of the band is that they make the same album over and over, bull obviously) if anything I feel like they’re trying to cover too many different styles.
I’m more engaged with their soundtrack work these days - even then they don’t really stick to an overall mood, the last soundtrack they did (Kin) had one of their swelling, almost poppy vocal songs on it (this is a well they keep going back to of late and I’m not a big fan of it)

The title track is fucking awesome too. The stand in drummer is incredible on this video…

Rave Tapes is class

It’s a shame they kind of stopped doing guest vocals - that Gruff Rhys one worked really, really well.

Stuart is a legend but his vocals just never really work for me. (it is him, right?)

The Aidan Moffat and Roky Erikson ones

Oh shit I know that track but never realised it was Roky.

Think it’s a little undercooked, they’ve said themselves they should have spent more time on it. It’s a decent album though and the analogue synth sounds are lovely.

No Medicine For Regret is another highlight on it for me, even it sounds a bit like a rewrite of How To Be A Werewolf.

The Lord is Out of Control is one of their best track titles too even if I don’t find the song that engaging

They should have fit Teenage Exorcists on there though

Could easily mistake Now You’re Taken for just a Philophobia-era Arab Strap track. Great stuff.

Kin is great but for me Atomic is their best soundtrack work.
Also a big fan of les revenants.

Imagine if Mogwai did do a weekender and Arab Strap played it too and Aidan joined them onstage :grinning:

Thought Atomic was great with the film but a bit dull on its own. Think they re-recorded it without John for the album release? Not sure why.

Forgot to listen to Kin actually, that’s long overdue

He joined them in Glasgow when they were doing that 2015 anniversary mini tour I think. Gruff Rhys joined them in London too but not the night I was at

They re-recorded Les Revenants too for some reason.
Kin soundtrack > film. Worth a watch for a reasonable scifi film with Mogwai soundtrack tho.

Class.
Reckon James Graham is due a guest spot with them now.

Not seen Aidan on stage with them in 15 years I don’t think, even when there’s been the opportunity. Also would guess they’ve not played Now You’re Taken more than half a dozen times anywhere since 97 (if at all). Feels like wishful thinking at this point, but who knows?

I can see the logic behind it, doesn’t always improve the listening experience… I never really clicked with OPN’s Good Time (re-recorded as well) until I heard the way it was synced with the film itself, at which point it really hit me

aye, he came on and did R U Still In 2 It. class.
