Mogwai 2025+

The Edinburgh night of this tour was both the only time I’ve ever been to the Corn Exchange and the first time I heard Fuck Buttons. Did not care for the former, thought the latter had been sent by God to show me what the dream music in my head would sound like.

Seen them four times now, after Friday’s excellent gig. Massive 14 year gap between shows two and three though. First time was this at Plug in Sheffield in 2006. Don’t remember much because I saw my very recently ex-girlfriend snogging the lad she broke up with me for in the corridor on my way to the loo, so spent the rest of the evening getting very very drunk. I promise I’m over it.

They did five nights at the ICA. I think this was the one I went to after picking up a ticket off some random bloke on a message board.

Go on then:

Headline set at an all dayer, so not quite full gig length. I remember being a bit disappointed not to get Satan or Herod (in fact there’s zero Young Team in there!) but looking back it’s a nice set. Batcat was really good as a closer actually, a big pummelling “you’ve just seen Mogwai” statement.

(Also playing that day, Zu, Fuck Buttons, Zun Zun Egui(), Thought Forms, Crippled Back Phoenix… what a day)

This was probably the best of the 20+ times I’ve seen them. It was properly magical.

That and this. Although, I’m not sure it counts as a gig.

I don’t want to ever see them go acoustic. But I’d definitely glance at a stripped back set where they play the quieter ones.

Stuart very occasionally does solo sets where he plays some of the quiet vocal songs, would like to see one of those

ok I’m all in on a seated tour in cathedrals/theatres and places where they play

Tuner
Take Me Somewhere Nice
Stanley Kubrick
Major Treat
Dial Revenge
Kings Meadow
Rollerball
Tracy
Helicon II
Relative Hysteria
Now You’re Taken
Stop Coming To My House

You could still chuck in a few face-melters as well, but would be really cool for them to tour something different and for ‘the heads’. Obviously a huge amount of rehearsing involved and many of the older tracks included John.

I asked Stuart at a Q&A if Mogwai would ever play a soundtracks tour and he said he’d suggested it but the rest of the band though it would be too boring.

They could do a Yo La Tengo and play a softer / quieter set followed by a harder / louder set.

Or, more comically, play your suggested set but with Like Herod in the middle of it.
