Guys, part of my job is writing those personalised replies to customer service issues on Twitter.

I agree, I am a useless sack of jizz. But two things:

  1. You’d be amazed at how effective the human, empathetic approach is at diffusing angry people
  2. When I say “I will ensure your concerns are passed on” (or similar), rest assured that these concerns will be passed on, and then followed up again and again and again until we have a resolution

Please don’t forget that there’s a human being behind these corporate accounts, and every single one of them hates their job.

Also - why have so many people now got verified accounts?

It’s because now anyone can apply!

But they don’t just hand them out. To get your verified tick, you need:

  1. To link your account to a verified phone number
  2. To write a lengthy pitch for why you think you should be verified
  3. To provide a link that backs up your pitch

All of these no-marks who are tricking you into reading their screeds must have tricked Twitter into thinking they’re important. No idea how they managed it.

when i worked in a call centre i used to just say this to people to try and keep them happy without encouraging them to log a formal complaint. never passed them on to anyone obviously. assumed it was probably the same everywhere.

Maybe I just work for an exemplary company.

(not when they had actual problems that needed fixing obviously, just when they were talking shite about “your security is too hard”, “it takes too long to get through to you”, “my account shouldn’t let me go overdrawn when i spend money that i don’t have” etc etc)
