I’m not a fan of that video that gets referenced every time. It’s also not representative of her musical output. She gets a bad rep on this forum for, as far as I can tell, being quite earnest, having gone to a (free) performing arts school and for being popular with music critics.
Saw her live the other week at Brixton o2, which was effectively a homecoming gig for her. It was one of the most emotive and spellbinding performances I’ve seen. Yes, she’s earnest, and she really cares about the regular folk who she grew up with in South London, and that comes across in her work. I think both albums are wonderful (even if the production ranges from sublime to very mediocre). Obviously they’re not going to be to everyone’s taste, but there’s a weirdly sneering disdain here for her, rather than just, y’know, simply not liking her music and moving on.
