I don’t quite get the comparison because it assumes all music made with laptops and electronics is really interesting and bleeding edge. As someone who loves music made with laptops and electronics, and who makes music with laptops and electronics (as well as guitars), there’s loads of totally lame, boring stuff in that field, too. And, I should add, stuff that doesn’t sound particularly “totally original” or whatever, but that is still great for loads of other reasons.
SOLD OUT AUDIENCE MEMBER: (irked as a consumer) Play one of the tracks from your critically acclaimed debut album!
BON IVER: (wiping his face) You couldn’t possibly understand. A twenty-five-year-old who can’t grow a proper beard and has just Googled “impostor syndrome” because he suspect that that’s probably a factor in why he isn’t regarded as the greatest mind of his generation yet posted on a popular indie music message board

I want to note that I like Bon Iver (I’ve not listened to hardly any of that new album though yet), even though - unlike most people who may have trouble separating him from the “log cabin” thing - I have some difficulty separating him from the Bon Iver who you can imagine appearing in various different contexts in front of sold-out audiences around the metaphysical globe that exists within every imagined universe we create
Would you call 13th floor elevators or The Seeds indie rock?
The term has become a strange end of time catch all thing thats become practically useless. Like Ought are pretty much a throwback Post-Punk band as well.
Might as well ask for any non metal guitar bands for all its worth. It means the same thing now.
i haven’t kept up with them either. first album was decent but a bit long and a slog at times i thought, didn’t really manage to keep up the momentum of the brilliant opening track. i think i listened to the second when it came out but don’t really remember - i might try to catch up on them.
Yep. I like their records, but I can see how shit sound would ruin the density and layers and subtlety going on in there and make them sound like a recorded turd.
Couple more for the list.
Yak and Doe.
MJ from the Hookworks produces loads of bands of course, including Doe which jogged my memory.
Yeah the Girl Band album was a little uneven but the highlights are really up there, Paul especially.
I like how they take elements/structures of dance & techno music and make that sound come out of a standard indie rock band setup. Surprised there aren’t more bands trying to do this.
