Movies with a grossly capitalist message but you love them anyway

Thought about this yesterday when watching Baby Boom with my mum. Admittedly it’s about downscaling your capitalism, but is still about running your own business. I bloody love it though!

Same with Working Girl - always dreamed of getting my own office not in the world trade centre tho and blasting Carly Simon

Are there any films you have a guilty pleasure for like this?

Do have a soft spot for those 80s John Hughes movies (Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club etc) that are all about pretending to be slightly rebelling against conformity but always end up with the kooky/working class kid in love with/aspiring to be in with the capitalist douchebag characters.

Still like Forrest Gump, despite everything

Not necessarily a message but the lego movie is basically a big advert, yet still a lot of fun and good

Not seen it but a twat I went to school with called the Lego film “socialist propaganda” so it can’t be all bad

It does the pixar thing of having a surface anti-capitalist message while also shilling for big brick.

Everything is awesome when you’re part of a team (specifically, the communist team)

Back to the Future.

The happy resolution isn’t Marty learning to love his family for who they are. Instead they all become more successful/richer/more beautiful.

omg you’re right

I suppose they try and walk it back in the next film but… yeah. Still an atd of a film, though.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is vociferously anti-communist

When I was very little we’d go to the local video shop every Thursday and most week’s my mum would choose Shirley Valentine, my dad would get Total Recall, and I’d get Baby Boom (or Turner and Hooch, then in later years What About Bob?). Baby Boom is such a strange film for a child to like.

Also Working Girl is one of the best films ever. I can’t approve of the OP more.

i really like The Big Short, but i realise that it is scum bags making billions by screwing over scumbags with no consequences whilst folk literally die from the effects
