When you you hear a good lyric in a song then post it in here

Retweeted this yesterday when a Joanna Newsom lyrics bot spat it out:

It does not suffice
for you to say I am a sweet girl,
or to say you hate to see me sad
because of you.
It does not suffice,
to merely lie beside each other,
as those who love each other do.

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not” - John Lennon

Was listening to Carrie & Lowell last night and then remembered the start of Tonya Harding:

Tonya Harding, my star
Well this world is a cold one
But it takes one to know one

I like it in when love breaks down when he goes

My love and I are boxing clever
she’ll never crowd me out
fall be free as old confetti
and paint the town, paint the town

was just thinking yesterday that this is good lyrics

I am the cold ground
You are the hard rain
I don’t know why… We can never complement each other

You’re in your window
I’m on your driveway
We woke your father
I had to shout above the wind to reach you

I don’t know what it is about it but I’ve always really loved this bit in Friday I’m in Love. Not exactly clever or emotional or anything but there’s something about it.

“(what a gorgeous sight) to see you eat in the middle of the night”

That whole song is just devastating. Incredible bit of writing.

Love the bit about riding the horse in I Break Horses.

“A first her warmth felt good between my legs.
Then that warmth turned to an itch
It turned to a scratch
It turned to a gash…”

There’s an old Divine Comedy b-side about the singer being on a summer holiday as a kid and being sad when he finds a big aviary in the garden. It ends suggesting he’d freed them:

When the last day came I took my time
They called my name and revved the car
“When nature calls, you must reply,” they laughed,
Waving goodbye to Paradise Farm

Yeah, her lyrics are as worthy of critical study as any contemporary poet for sure

More so that Bob fucking Dylan

I love this bit in the last verse of Tangled Up in Blue. It’s probably the least clever line in the song yet it perfectly encapsulates the idle thoughts you have after a breakup and how your network of friends as a couple falls apart after you separate.

All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenters’ wives
Don’t know how it all got started
I don’t know what they’re doing with their lives

It’s the lyrics to Teenage Spaceship that I love. No idea what it’s about, other than Smog being an actual spaceship, but there’s just something about the way that they’re delivered:

I was beautiful with all my lights
Loomed so large on the horizon
So large, people thought my windows
Were stars
So large on the horizon
People thought my windows
Were stars

A teenage spaceship
A teenage spaceship

And I swore I’d never lay like a log
Bark like a dog

I was a teenage smog
Sewn to the sky
