MTftSB: It's 1979 today on 6 Music

#1

The number ones from the year look pretty solid (with a couple of minor exceptions) to me:
Village People "Y.M.C.A."
Ian Dury and The Blockheads "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick"
Blondie "Heart of Glass"
Bee Gees "Tragedy"
Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive"
Art Garfunkel "Bright Eyes"
Blondie "Sunday Girl"
Anita Ward "Ring My Bell"
Tubeway Army "Are ‘Friends’ Electric?"
The Boomtown Rats "I Don’t Like Mondays"
Cliff Richard "We Don’t Talk Anymore"
Gary Numan "Cars"
The Police "Message in a Bottle"
The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star"
Lena Martell "One Day at a Time"
Dr. Hook "When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman"
The Police "Walking on the Moon"
Pink Floyd “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)”

Tell me which was the best year for number ones then.

had no idea that Dr Hook song was from 1979, seems well older. like 1978 or something

#3

Correct. It’s from their 1978 album Pleasure and Pain.

#4

knew it!

#5

Today is the anniversary of 1979. People did different things then, and lived different lives.

#6

“we don’t talk anymore” is a cast iron banger

plus it features a backing vocal that goes “sheep, sheep, sheep” (or in my head it does anyway - can’t be looking a cliff richard vidoes on youtube in the office to check)

#7

Fucking hell

music’s changed

#8

^This
It’s a pretty eclectic mix. 2016 seems bland and samey by comparison. Either that or I’m getting old.

#9

I’m really enjoying the 1982 era TOTPs repeats at the moment

#10

I’m imagining they must be frantically airbrushing out all of the nonce presenters though

#11

they just don’t show those episodes

Think it’s less of an issue now they are in the 80s
