I’ve long been of the opinion that the Christmas Canon closed in the mid-90s, around the time of Mariah Carey and East 17. However, I wonder if I’ve been a bit hasty. We’ve been listening to a Christmas songs compilation on Spotify and there are some late-era bangers on there.
So, this is a thread for songs post-1995 that deserve their place. To start, I’m nominating Kelly Clarkson:
(This isn’t a thread for Sufjan, Low or any of that sort of thing - even though Just Like Christmas deserves a place)
I’m undecided about The Darkness - but it’s been a shit year and I’m feeling generous. They can have a place
Oh, they are absolute cack, would finish below the Stereophonics on HGATR. But there’s something about the British naffness of their Christmas song that I find kind of endearing.
Yes this deserves a place.
They deserve to. Also look up the lyrics to their song How Dare You Call This Love
I’m all for naffness but not like this!
Anyway, something we can all agree on. This deserves a place
Should be fired out the Christmas cannon tbh
I feel like I need @TheBarbieMovie2023 to validate this one
Growing On Me by The Darkness is an absolute banger
Big fan of this one this year.
Obviously this should be in there
Cant get that Kelly Clarkson song out of my head
Oh gosh, me too. Proper sleep-depriving earworm that one
It was in my head trying to sleep last night!
A great tune
Hits all the requirements for a good Christmas song but criminally underrated
