Much maligned artists who aren't that bad

Sugar Ray aside as thats a given but Alien Ant Farm are nowhere near as bad as their reputation suggests

I’m coming to terms with the fact that I quite like some of their music. It is a challenging time.

Although I would infinitely prefer most of it with a different vocalist

Some clanging lyrics aside, the first vaccines album is pretty good and fun.

Many great prog bands are often maligned even today, and I think it’s still the aftershock of punk and underground culture. Rallying against huge song lengths and overly long solos was obviously a calling card for punk bands and journalism, to increase the appeal of punk bands with their more straightforward and unpretentious nature.

Whilst it’s true that lots of prog bands often indulged in sins like the above (and most people need never listen to Pictures at an Exhibition), many 60s-70s prog bands have excellent use of melodies, composition and dynamics.

Early Genesis (before Phil took over), Larks’ Tongues in Aspic to Red-era King Crimson, Camel, and even Yes produced plenty of excellent music. If you can overlook their indulgent moments (and to be fair, there are plenty), there is much to admire. And indeed, many great bands- Cardiacs, Television, Black Midi- have successfully combined the streamlined approach of punk with more proggy elements.

I kind of agree but imo you’re still conceding too much to the anti prog crowd! (and punk being anti prog I reckon is probably a bit overstated, but that’s another question)

Edit: I mean don’t overlook their indulgent moments, embrace them!

Huey Lewis and the News.

Sports is quite likely the most 80s-sounding record ever but also it clearly bangs.

ANThology is a Good Album and much more interesting to listen to than a lot of output from that era.

Phil is great. 90% of anti-Phil sentiment is just people regurgitating tired bullshit they picked up from watching American Psycho once

Don’t completely hate Simply Red tbh, they’ve got a couple of bops across the 549051 albums. Good live too, play the hits, note perfect, job done.
