Music Discoveries

After enjoying the excellent discussions in the How do you discover new acts thread, I thought i would finally create a thread that I’ve been meaning to for months.

This is a thread for sharing your music discoveries when you make them.

There are few thing quite as exciting as hearing a new band or artists you hadn’t heard before. It doesn’t matter how old or popular the music is, if it is new to you then it is a discovery. Share your discoveries on here and hopefully you can pass that exciting new find onto someone else too.

I’ll start -

Was listening to Six Degrees with Alan on WFMU yesterday and he played Big Blood. They seem to be a sort of experimental pop band, who appear to have been going for almost 20 years. I enjoyed them so much I subsequently listened to 2 of their album and loved them both. There seem to be plenty more albums for me to trawl through at some point.

I also listened to Secret Canine Agents on WFMU and heard On Being An Angel. A really good alt/shoegaze band. I’ve been really enjoying their On Being A Tape Vol 2 album.

Just this week I have discovered The Undisputed Truth, which was an early 70s psychedelic soul project driven by the legendary Norman Whitfield. Think Papa Was A Rolling Stone turned up to eleven

Fantastic. Love the decent into a psychedelic hole from about 4 mins, also love the pre chorus cries of “horns!” & “music!”.

I love Smiling Faces Sometimes but haven’t listened to anything else by them, should really change that. Of all places I discovered that song on an episode of Pretty Little Liars - just an insane needle drop at the end of a random episode in season 2 or 3

Made a couple of nice discoveries while listening to WFMU this morning.

The Solar Cell by A Magic Whistle. Really nice psychedelic folk synth. I’ve been listening to this album all evening. It’s all over the place, but I find it really compelling.

The other discovery was a British early 80s post punk act that I’d never heard of called The Lo Yo Yo. Their self titled album is being reissued and is rather good. I really like when they lean a bit more into their dubby side.
