Yeah very likely. Shame

yeah I saw them play Source Tags at Latitude with about 20 other people because (I assume) they didn’t announce it

Sooo weird.
Book a euro tour to celebrate an albums anniversary but let’s not tell anyone.

my old band Spoilers were the support of this tour and was hanging out with them when this conversation happened so can confirm the answer is: yes.

I think it’s because they’re relatively DIY these days but they’re also a bit scatty, it’s their more recent bassist who actually keeps the strings together, Conrad and Jason are relatively all over the place generally speaking. I mean the reason my old band supported that tour is because one of the members designed and hosted their website on the cheap for years, and despite that Conrad and Jason still struggle to remember who he is at times (me as well but I’ve spent a lot less time with them than he has so I’ll forgive them for that  )

Ah okay.
The new guy just joined before X didn’t he. There was a shakeup after ix.
It was Jason’s birthday for the Dublin Source Codes gig and Aubrey(?) the old bassist poured a drink over his head onstage whilst Jason was still wearing his bass and amped up.
Looked like he was struggling to not deck him tbf.

oh sorry it was Autry I meant, I’ve no idea about the new guy

Ah okay. Aye they ditched him and at least one other.

yeah I just looked it up, I had heard about the tension between them (I think largely because he was trying to keep the other two in check who are frankly more interested in partying or exploring) so it doesn’t really surprise me. I’ve enjoyed the times I’ve hung out with them over the years but fucking hell they’re exhausting after a while

After the show with Spoilers, they DJed at Big Hands next door and Conrad was wrecked just getting there. then when they played the next year at Night and Day he looked like he would fall over just getting on stage

The new bassist is really good though, he also took drumming duties but he sure can play

pretty much, aye. I heard a lot about that tour, was initially kinda jealous that I wasn’t going but afterwards when I got the full low-down it turned to some mild relief. It was nice hanging out in London and finally getting to see ‘Mark David Chapman’ live was rather life-affirming, even if it’s the wrong singer

To be fair to them, I mention Conrad being hammered but it didn’t affect their playing or the sound.

oh yeah, I’m pretty sure they’re fairly steaming every show, think they’re just used to it now.

They’re such an odd band really because fundamentally they are a punk band and like the D.I.Y nature that has stretched most of their career reflects that but then also make mad excessive prog-rock

I really, really want to know what Trail of the Dead did to awaken Mark Lanegan’s rage, I was so sad that wasn’t in the book.

I’m not really sure what constitutes bad production on a record - see lots about this and that sound being compressed or too loud/quiet but if the music as a whole is interesting I don’t really care (happy to concede it’s probably my cloth ears or a matter of a good job not being noticeable if done well but blurring in case the hotness of my take is cooled)

is he the really skinny guy? He packed a hell of a punch on drums when I saw them last, obviously it’s about technique not muscle but still, didn’t quite expect that!

Yeah that’s who I am thinking of - had the same thoughts as you tbh, he did look a bit of a lost child walking out with them but yeah, really good addition to them

Pavement…
