Oh yeah was their stuff out of print for a quite a while or something? Also wanted to ask about the Tricky album (top pick btw!), is Bad Dreams fairly representative of the rest of the albums sound?

I would say so, but also to listen to Maxinquaye (if you haven’t already). Still his best album and very similar to this sound.

My track (Zappa) did as well as expected but some nice comments made it all ok.

Pre Millennium Tension is absolutely my favourite of his - it’s his most paranoid/ claustrophobic and you can absolutely you hear him retreating/ hiding from all of the hype.

Maxinquaye has the hits and sounds much more open.

Angels With Dirty Faces is difficult because it has magic or manic moments and some really dull bits. This is the last album with Martina and you can sort of hear the awkwardness between them. PJ Harvey guests on a track. Nothing on it is as good as the best bits from the previous two but it still sounds like Tricky (which he stops doing at times later).

Juxtapose is a collaboration with DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill and it’s the closest he’s come to making a proper hip hop album.

Blowback sounds polished and has a load of guest features with indie/ rock singers and isn’t bad. Everything since then has a decent single track and a load of boring pop-rap-rock variations with different singers.

It’s one of those songs that is instantly classic as soon as you hear it (it was new to me). Will check out that album, never really investigated Dylan much as he has so many albums and don’t know where to start.

This is perfect! Beyond Tricky’s work / association with Massive Attack, I no next to nothing about his solo works so this breakdown is hugely appreciated - cheers Keith and @Mistersteve !

Think I’ll start with Pre Millennium Tension before moving on to Maxinquaye as yeah like I said in my comment Bad Dreams, the track sounds it was produced by Martin Rev or something similar and that paranoid / claustrophobic atmosphere was immense. Juxtapose sounds like an intriguing prospect too with DJ Muggs on board…

Highway 61 and Bringing it all Back Home imo, then the rest of the 60s stuff

Hurricane is from Desire which is a solid 70s album though (I prefer it to Blood on the Tracks tbh)

So I’ve spent a bit of time with Pre Millennium Tension this week and wow what a record! It’s the sort of album that gets under your skin a bit. It’s built on really minimal but quietly aggressive beats paired perfectly with Tricky’s tense and raspy flow - it kinda almost makes you want to look over your shoulder. Sounds like Tricky was going through quite a rough time too. Standouts along with Bad Dreams (which has really stuck with me) were Christinsands (the way the vocals have this rippled / almost vibrating effect going on is so cool), My Evil is Strong (Love the way the beat crashes over itself) and Piano (again a very simple beat but like the way Tricky just intones calmly over it).

Ta again @keith - this has been a terrific find!

I think everyone should listen to God In Three Persons

a story about MR.X who finds a pair of conjoined twins (female and male) who are able to heal those who touch them - he ends up promoting them as an act and hold religious ceremonies before falling in LUST with the female twin - he ends up wanting to control them but finds it impossible to control a pair that consider themselves gender fluid as they wont take his labels which leads to rather grotesque and frankly hideous and shocking consequences.

I love how ahead of the time the story is in that album
