I’m working on a list of people I feel like more music fans should be following online. It’s a mixture of TikTokkers, YouTubers, podcasters, good accounts on Instagram, and a bunch of music journalists. People who make videos, podcasts or publish writing about music online.
This is partly inspired by my recent podcasts with one of my favourite feature writers Ilana Kaplan, a musician who is really fascinating on YouTube called Mary Spender, and this week is the turn of one of my favourite people to follow on TikTok, ShoshinBoy (see his videos here) who makes these amazingly analogue videos putting archive of The Cure, Nirvana, Pavement an so much more into context, whilst talking through an old phone into a TV.
I guess I’m thinking of creating a list that’s more than the just Anthony Fantano, as I feel like there a lot of new voices posting online but it’s really fragmented.
I’m also thinking of creating a really great links page and mapping the current music media landscape.
Would love your input as I’m sure there’s people I’ve not come across yet
You can hear the recent podcasts I mentioned by searching for Drowned in Sound wherever you get your podcasts - all the main links here
A few people I’ve enjoyed following online recently who mostly post about music
Common Revolt - has been posting a lot around the My Chemical Romance tour and return of Hayley Williams. Really nice and simple news updates | Instagram
Derrick Gee - quite enjoy the way he approaches sharing his fandom. Often it’s quite high-end audiophile stuff but oddly he reminds me a bit of former DiS editor Mike Diver (think it’s his vibe more than anything). | YouTube
FairPlay - whilst not strictly about music, I really like the advocacy that musician Ynes is doing for working class people in music and culture. I’m gonna be on her podcast soon and she’s well worth a follow | Instagram
