Massively unorthodox both in attitude and style as a guitar player and yeah, so massively underrated. The fact that he was such a meticulous and accomplished composer, yet pretty much unparalleled when it came to improvisational ability on his guitar just boggles my mind. I love this video so much - Stevie Vai does his thing and fuck me it’s brilliant (and yeah, he had to up his game so much for FZ just to consider him!) but with a quarter of the notes FZ plays so much more. But I think that’s why they worked so well together…

Yeah there’s a point for me with bass though where it would just sound better on a guitar, all that flabby low end washes together when it’s a really busy riff

I mean we all love dub step but we are two separate things here.

I’m a simple guy, I just like a smooth groovy bassline

I mean don’t we all. Like this one.

How do you feel about this sort of thing Bam, just out of interest?

I love this track and things like it where he’s essentially using his bass as extra percussion for the verses. Similar to Lacquer Head by Primus.

Also Buckethead is a ludicrously good guitarist.

Buckethead’s Cajun Fried Recipe.

Just sounds a mess to me sorry.

I think we come from different musical traditions you and me.

You practice and play music live professionally right?

All my playing has been purely in service of recording stuff and when it’s done I never want to play it again, learning something is just a vessel for recording it as best a possible.

Sometimes it’s really cool to see somebody show off or be virtuosic on an instrument but for me that’s more like watching somebody juggling, a cool and impressive talent but it doesn’t move me. Some bands for me seem to blend the two like Steely Dan for example but the virtuosity of the session players there is just in service of a song not the pure reason ya dig?

Genuinely interesting. I do generally agree about the song/music coming first but I definitely also get a buzz when I see ridiculous skill/talent on show.

Have you seen the famous Cory Henry keyboard solo on Lingus by Snarky Puppy, for the We Like It Here album/session? I get actual goosebumps every time I watch it because it just feels like something special is happening. Like he’s channeling something otherworldly and even he’s amazed at what he’s playing. Then the rest of the band’s just knocking it out of the park and it’s just awesome.

I wouldn’t say it’s showing off, it’s more a combination of incredible talent and a lifetime of hard work to create something exciting.

Interesting you should say that as I do really like snarky puppy and jaga jazzist for example because I think the tracks are more structured around building a scene and the great playing comes in and out in service of that. Sometimes it still gets a bit fatiguing for me to hear really long jazz fusion solos but that’s often background music for me when I’m doing other stuff.

I feel like stuff like primus and buckethead they start with a cool complicated riff and the song is bent to fit around that which is the opposite I guess

Some of it is so intangiable and subjective anyway like certain types of melody will not speak to me emotionally and seem cheesy whereas change a couple of notes around and I’m feeling something deep and ambiguous going on. These kind of building blocks of emotion in music are like colours you don’t really know how other people perceive them

Listened to some phoebe bridgers the other day, it was nice but very one note and a little on the nose. Felt emotional but like when you see a hollywood movie and they trick you with the strings

Same string section and psychedelic vocals on every track past the second album I think.
