Do you have any favourites? Any plans to see any soon?

I saw Hamilton for the first time a few weeks back and yeah it was great. Worthy of the hype.

Saw Chicago on the plane back from Japan last year and I think it is a very well executed movie musical.

Hadestown is properly brilliant. Has enough standard musical touches to appeal to a wide audience, but enough unusual twists to appeal to indie twats (me) as well. Tears in my eyes by the end, will definitely see it again if it makes it far enough north eventually

Probably never will

Saw My Fair Lady last year, off to see Chicago soon, wish more Sondheim stuff would come up North but it rarely does. Hopefully the new/current Cabaret will tour.

Really want to watch Les Mis again

Top 3 musicals:

The Blues Brothers
Muppets Christmas Carol
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

I saw Les Mis once if you mean just on stage, it was really good, especially all the fighting.

I have seen Wicked and Book of Mormon live, and a friend visiting later in the year wants to see Mormon too so I may see it again. I had a great time at both though not sure if the latter really holds up now

I have seen others in movie form if that counts. I know people who are big into musicals who listen to cast recordings and such before seeing them live if ever but I kinda want to see it all fresh in the theatre, not sure if I’m being a purist knob or no (answer is yes probably)

Hopelessly Devoted To You is the best musical song.

Most fun I have had at a musical was Toxic Avenger The Musical when it was first put on at the relatively tiny Southwark Playhouse. It moved to the West End for a short period after that and I think it is being brought back again soon (if not already).

Other than that I have seen these at the theatre, in rough order of preference:

Hamilton
Cabaret at the Kit-Kat Club (when Self Esteem was in it)
Standing at the Sky’s Edge
Book of Mormon

Tend to like musicals that are either full of swells/dolls/mobsters or are big pop fests.

Re: the former, I’m thinking about trying to get cheap tickets for Kiss Me Kate at the Barbican over the bank holiday weekend. Looks fun.

We went to see Starlight Express last week. “Idea for a musical: toy trains, but on rollerskates”

It’s supposed to be a musical theatre representation of a young rail enthusiast’s imagination, which is why there’s almost no filter in terms of the daftness of the ideas or the outlandishness of the costumes. Barely any plot, but very very enjoyable, spectacular, and warmly acted. Quite a small theatre too with a ‘train track’ weaving through much of the seated area, so you have the actors singing right in front of you at times.

Also, got tickets to see Hamilton when it comes to Norwich next year.

I’d like to see Newsies & Waitress at some point

And the Beatles were pretty good too, if we’re stating the obvious.
