My Dad Wrote A Porno

I saw that My Dad Wrote A Porno are doing a show in Amsterdam tonight, thinking of going along with some cheap-ass Ticketswap tickets, and then realised that there’s no dedicated thread for the podcast.

Does anyone here like it? It’s gotten quite formulaic at this point, but there are still moments which make me laugh out loud now and again. Funny thing is, I think the three of them are very funny when doing the commentary on the books themselves, but I can’t stand those extra episodes they do because I find them really annoying and self-congratulatory in other contexts.

Genuinely have had many moments where it’s made me laugh hard, when it’s at it’s best, it’s very very funny.

At this point, the books they’re narrating now were written after the podcast started right? I’m curious to see if the popularity changes the writing style at all. Doesn’t feel like there’s any evidence of that so far.

Well done him

One of the things they do way too much is after Jamie says something, one of the other two says the same thing in a high pitched shocked sounding voice. Way too much.

That’s what made me stop listening. Felt like it became more about their reactions and not the story itself. Takes about 20 minutes to get through a paragraph

It’s four years today that we went to the live show, according to Facebook! I’d only listened to a handful of episodes before we went but it was very funny. Haven’t listened to it since - a bit surprised to hear it’s still going as thought they’d have done the concept to death by now

I do keep getting to the point where I’m done with it and think I’ll unsubscribe from the feed, but then an episode comes up which makes me laugh and I’m sucked back in again

Really enjoyed it over several episodes in the first season (“Belinda blinked” was a big thing in the ones I listened to, and I think she was selling saucepans to execs or something) but the hosts are so grating and the concept wore out really quickly for me. Especially so now, as you mention, the stories must just have been written for the show, that totally ruins it for me. Veracity in podcast making please.

It’s still based around the same character and Steels Pots & Pans

Has she sold any pots or pans yet

She gave a lot of them away at the O2 Arena, but otherwise, not so much.

Alice Levine is a very funny person. I think she’s most of the reason I enjoyed this podcast.

I think I’m glad I stopped listening when I did because this sounds like it’s one joke being bludgeoned slowly to death

Yeah, I think she’s great. I also enjoy the enthusiasm in Jamie’s narration, particularly when he’s given a character an accent.

It’s become a spy-drama with very little narrative cohesion by this point, I don’t get the impression that it’s a joke to Rocky Flintstone.

Think I stopped listening after the (possibly book 3 (?) spoiler) sloughing penis skin bit after a surgery went wrong

Binged through the first couplish of seasons in a short space of time while commuting and found it hilarious. Like at times embarrassing yourself on the tube cos you’re laughing too much at it levels, couple of times when I listened to it on the way back from post-work drinks I had to turn it off.

And then pretty much as quickly as I started it, I stopped and never returned. There’s only really a variation on one (admittedly pretty funny) joke really and after a while the guy who’s not the narrator and to a lesser extent Alice really get on your nerves.

Me and a friend were discussing in the context of Athletico Mince how an issue with comedy podcasts is because you can produce them so quickly and for pretty much no budget almost all of them carry on for way too long and completely wear off, whereas if it was being made for TV or even radio you’d have to factor in budget, ratings and whether or not you can be bothered way more.

So very this.

Tbf this is the story for all but 1 podcast I’ve ever listened to more than a couple episodes of.
