My mum talks about how before I was born she was torn over what to call me if I turned out to be a boy. Her favourite name was Ben, but if she called me that my name would have been Ben Ding :flushed:

Thankfully I was a girl, but then the name she planned on went to another baby in the ward who had jaundice and put my mum off (seriously my mum, so judgemental!). Apparently I’m named after one of snooker-champ’s John Parrot’s daughters who looked cute in a magazine she was reading. And it was only two letters different from her original choice.

The best almost-name is another DiSer, however I’m not at liberty to divulge that information.

My sister had this. She changed her name by deed poll to the diminutive in the end, easier all round.

it’s a beautiful name imo
think i like most names really

I knew one vaguely in Manchester - it’d be weird if it was the same one.

Yeah my grans dog was called Blue…good dog name.

My three kids have old school names…two are fairly common names but my youngest is called Ernest. You never see pens or cups or keyrings or whatever with ‘Ernest’ printed on!

I quite liked Ernest if we had a boy.

Sub thread: names your partner ruled out for stupid reasons

Roland as apparently they’d get bullied because of Roland off Grange Hill. 30 Yr old reference got that one struck off.
Mabel as it reminded him of Maybe it’s Maybelline…

There is a Roland at a toddler group I take R to, cool name and he is a top little man :+1:

Also, Mabel is a great name too. You have excellent taste in names, Slicky.

She ruled out Alice because of numerous feuds with women at her sister’s salon.

It probably would have failed my Top 50 names rule too.

I like the name Roland now you’ve both mentioned it…

Might call a cat it tho rather than my kid but I’m throwing it out there

Oh good…just didn’t feel like a comment that I should ignore

Seems like a very good Cat name too though, tbf. I see him as a black cat.

i know a roland and he absolutely hates it and goes by a nickname. he might be the right age for something on grange hill 30 years ago to have influenced that though

My wee bros middle name is Roland, not sure my mum and dad agreed on this

If my sister were a boy, she’d have been called Jacob. If my I were a boy, I’d have been called Jacob. When my parents had a boy, they called him Phillip. Parents are odd.

Had lots of name discussions with my ex. It was fun but ultimately futile and really saddening.
I was always a big fan of Prudence but we did settle on a couple which were lovely and it makes me sad to even think about.

If I was a girl I would have been called Julia after the song by The Beatles apparently. Would have preferred Martha tbh.

His real name is Reptar.

Maybe they call you or your sister (or both) Jacob behind your back

Probably, they can barely get our names right when they’re speaking to our faces.
