Interested by the fact the top choices are the names of DiSers or their children.

We can’t get a reading on the Hivemind opinion without a properly constructed poll, unfortunately.

Go on my son (Arthur, 5).

My brother’s name is Jack Oliver and he’s a nob, so

Why the dislike of Walter:

  • Famous person/character called Walter (e.g. Walter The Softy)
  • The nickname “Wally”
  • It’s a bit of an old man name/it’s not fashionable
  • Don’t like the sound of it

Can’t believe I’m going to have to do this in less than two months. Frightening, really.

It’s really kind of people to start polling on your behalf.

middle names is bit of a different context to be fair. I’m going to assume you’re either big into Depeche Mode or a massive fan of the movie Van Wilder: Party Liaison…

We had five choices ready to go when A turned up. GF was thinking of names from about two months in, which is not the norm but she’s so organised I just went with it.

Didn’t matter in the end as when A came out the only name she responded to was the one my GF had been saying since the start so all that thinking was for nothing.

Surely it’s going to be Lance, no?

Been talking about this recently with my gf as we wanna have kids at some point in the not too distant future.

We’re both teachers and there are so many names that are nice but are ruled out because of an association with a particular child we’ve taught that was annoying

My son is an Oliver. Didn’t realise how common it was until I registered the birth. Muhammad top, Oliver second. Oh well, he’s stuck with it now.

Three friends of mine in the last year have named their daughters’s after M (well, 1 just went for it as the middle name).

STOP MAKING HER NAME COMMON, I TRIED HARD TO BE UNUSUAL FFS

I’m surprised they’ve done that (not that I know you or your friends). I’ve always assumed names chosen by friends for their kids are off limits when choosing names for your kids.

That’s very flattering, but also a bit weird IMO.

There were a few names we immediately ruled out because friends or family had used them for their kid. Would never have dreamed of using a name they were - especially if it was unusual!

We’re not close friends, I found out about them all through facebook rather than them saying anything and when I was like COOL NAME! on their announcements they said yeah, it was after M and I was like hmmmm, I’ll brood over that a bit for the next few decades and be secretly annoyed with you forever.
