Girls names I liked included a few botanical ones. I really liked Ivy (which was also my great gran’s name), if I had a girl named that though I would totally have been calling her Ivysaur all the time as a nickname and I can imagine that being very annoying for her.

Oh, and a family tradition is botanical middle names. Luckily it’s been all women for the past few generations. Thank fuck I’m a girl cos if i weren’t one of my middle names was going to be Lathyrus.

Thank you, I am bad at working things out. Sounds like a very nice name but I can understand it being a pain to have because of it being uncommon, which is a shame

If I ever have children my one rule would be to not give them names that people will have trouble spelling. I have a surname that people don’t understand and it’s a continual pain in the ass.

My friends have all been pretty traditional in naming their kids: chloes, James, Kathryn etc. Oh apart from one who went with Cassima…

knew an Alex who died when we were at college, he was really charismatic and super popular, when he died people said how there would be lots of little Alexes running about in 10 years named after him, none of these Alexes have materialised, guess it is understandable, it is pretty morbid to name children after someone who died young in sad circumstances, but still find it a bit sad that that strength of feeling was just temporary thing

Names are great, aren’t they? I really love naming things and talking about names. I feel like being some sort of name expert would be an interesting job.

Elizabeth is the best girl’s name, for this reason. You can pretty much pick your own name.

I wanted a slightly ambiguous nature name that wasn’t a flower. I write about place and I love the sea so I went for Malin which is one of the sea regions because it was a wild sea, it was a good name that I really liked but never loved so it didn’t feel like I’d tire of it (all the names I really loved I went off too quickly or became too popular or something, Malin was always hovering around the top though), and it’s also read out on the shipping forecast so being an insomniac I love that kind of repetitive place naming.

Her middle name is Nova because I liked t and I wanted a space name. Because space :+1:

I did consider some family names but they were all too high in popularity for my liking (Violet).

Until I had her though April was always my most serious consideration, no reason but always liked it.

I also thought it would be dead easy to pronounce BUT NO! everyone says Marlin or Maylin. Fucking Ma-lin. Couldn’t be more simple.

Unique but not bizarre, perfect balance.

We’ve had an element of the teacher’s naughty kids issue in weighing up names too, but fortunately my wife has taught mainly schools with large Muslim populations so there’s less of an issue with it than there may otherwise have been.

As for origins, unless you buy into the whole ‘x means blessed’ type thing, I think you’re better off going for names you like the sound of, don’t have negative connotations for you both & work well together. Our daughter’s name and both prospective ones for the upcoming arrival are not commonplace, but not weird either.

As an aside, we should all probably be cautious posting any personal info on open webspace.

You’d have thought that simple names are easy for idiots to understand wouldn’t you. I’m Richie, yet get called Richard, Ricky or Rick every day. Or have my name spelt Ritchie, even though I wear a name badge with the correct spelling every day for almost 10hrs.
