You’ve got ‘Meema’ (?) but no ‘Granny’!

Granny was an oversight. Meema (Meemaw?) is (I think) one of the weird American ones innit

fairy nuff.

mick mcmanus’ son/Guildford petrol station/70s

Abuela (Abuelita when I was a kid)

My Gran was fiercely competitive and would always cheat at Monopoly. If we somehow started winning she would denounce us as cheats and make a scene until it really didn’t seem worthwhile to continue, or she’d just flip the board or something and end the whole thing by ‘storming’ off. She was in her late eighties/early nineties and we were mostly prepubescent!

My Nana was rather austere, a huge Tory and VERY racist. One of the hilarious ironies in her life was that she ended up marrying a European immigrant.

When I was a teenager I had a black girlfriend for a few months. Ahead of me bringing her to a family event, my Mum pre-warned my Nana about this expecting her to go nuts. Her response was “oh well, that’s very fashionable these days isn’t it?”

My Granny was very very warm and lovely but was a bear of very little brain.

I have a very clear memory of being about 8 and being really into sci-fi and reading about space exploration and stuff. She told me that she didn’t approve of space travel.

This baffled me and I asked why not.

“Because if you travel too far into space you’d get to heaven and no-one is supposed to go to heaven before they’re dead so you’d upset God.”

Ok Granny.

She was ace though. Probably had more hugs from her in a year than from either of my parents in my lifetime. GBOG.

My Arg grandma is pretty mean and not at all gran-like. She tells us all we’re fat and says I dress really badly (true tbf).

I visited her a few years back and the airline lost my bag so I’d been wearing the same clothes for nearly a week and hadn’t been able to do some stuff I’d planned as it required walking boots and my waterproof coat. I got a bit emotional about it and her maid gave me a hug, she told my grandma to give me a cuddle but the idea of showing anyone affection was so alien to her that she just stood there and said “why?” :grinning:

My English grandma was the loveliest thing to walk this planet though

Surely the ultimate aim of dogging in the woods?

Tried to post about my Nans but started tearing up. Might try again later.

“Good”

My nana was sitting in my mums back garden and our neighbour came in the back gate to come and have a chat. As he walked up the garden my nana saw him and shouted at the top of her voice (imagine thick geordie accent) “JYAAANE! THERES A BLACK MAN COOMIN OOP THE GARDEN!”

Grandma (RIP), my mum’s mum, had a big perm and ran a dog grooming/informal kennel thing from her house. Always about 5-10 dogs at her house when we were kids. Don’t remember her ever talking about anything other than dogs and gardening.

Granny on my dad’s side is a Lancashire girl done good, tells lots of stories where she milks how poor she was growing up, so much so that it’s a running joke in the family like the Monty Python four Yorkshiremen thing. She’s quite religious, mainly got into it for the singing but also believes it’s a sin to ever not speak her mind. This has led to her being thrown out of choirs, golf clubs, WI stuff, and offending various members of the family by calling them fat through the years. She’s great at telling rambling stories, usually at family gatherings we just set her off let her range through her incredible memories. Oh and also she lived in the US for a bit and was a 10-pin bowling champion!

Awwww! Thanks! My Nan is in hospital again but she’ll be okay I’m sure. Both Nans had incredible lives that were very interesting so I’ll talk about them tomorrow!

Thought I didn’t know my grandmas name as everyone called her queenie which I thought couldn’t be her name, turned out it was her name

My Grandma is going to be 96 this year.

Since her 90th she has become more and more demanding about us dressing up for her party. Started as red, white and blue for jubilee Yr. Has since been wear a hat you made yourself, wear purple, pirates, hippies, kings and queens.
This year is dress as a commonwealth country.

She still goes to M&S each day to get the bargains, voted labour last election for first time ever due to her grandson working so hard for them in David Cameron’s constituency so a real no-hope one really, lives on her own and is mega fiercely independent. Cooks great cakes and sends them down regularly.

My nan hated going to the dentist and said she hated it so much she’d rather give birth than go to the dentist

Apparently she didn’t mind giving birth that much though as she did it 6 times

My nan used to give me and my sister a few coins as a treat every now and again. My sister used to get two or three pound coins and I, being four years younger, used to get two 1p pieces and a 2p piece. My mum used to top it up occasionally.

She also used to drink a bottle of that egg liquor advocaat every week of her life. She lived until she was 96.
