and my dad’s exactly [counts on fingers] 32 years older than you!

And it’s probably the only salvageable song from this album. ‘Southern Pacific’ is okay I suppose. ‘Motor City’ is REALLY stupid, basically Neil giving out about Japanese cars.

I think his guitar sound is still great on this album though, when he really goes for it it has that disgusting fuzzy break up to it.

T-Bone, man, just too good

you have (at least) 32 fingers?

T-Bone reminds me of Mark E Smith’s ode to his favourite meal (admittedly it’s a much more aggressive take and purely because of the lyrical content)…

binary finger-counting m8

is Re-Ac-Tor the loudest Neil’s ever sounded on record, front to back?

Maybe Ragged Glory.

Front to back yeah but don’t cry and eldorado destroy everything in their path

Really looking forward to that record coming up.

Also wondered if the beginning of ‘Southern Pacific’ was a nod to Blackfoot’s ‘Train Train’

Sounds eerily similar after the harmonica interlude of course.

Never listened to this one; pretty good so far but hard to look past how much the wordless chorus in “Opera Star” reminds me of Yoda singing:

Mid week poll for the playlist, choose two off Re-Ac-Tor:

  • Opera Star
  • Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze
  • T-Bone
  • Get Back On It
  • Southern Pacific
  • Motor City
  • Rapid Transit
  • Shots

Think this one is a bit unfairly neglected. I don’t listen to it all that much, because when I get the need for a bit of the Horse I’ll always go to Ragged Glory and Weld first, but it’s still decent stuff. I’d say it was way better than Zuma, if Zuma didn’t have Cortez. It’s of a piece with Trans in that it’s from the period when Neil and Pegi were working relentlessly on a very demanding programme aimed at communicating with their son, and you can hear that frustration and focus in the record - it’s more wired and angsty than other CH albums, definitely feels like Neil wasn’t smoking as much weed during this time (although I doubt that). The only clunker here is Get Back On It, but at two minutes long that’s hardly a problem. I love the train rhythm of Southern Pacific (and that’s a song that found a whole new life with the International Harvesters when we get on to them in a few weeks), and Shots is classic NY. Digging this one out has probably been the highlight of this listening club so far, I’m not sure I knew how much I liked it.

Oh, and T-Bone is not long enough, That could go on for half an hour and I’d still be digging it. I love that Crazy Horse huddle where they all lock in on something and just focus on it relentlessly.

So listened to this and Hawks and Doves and Re.ac.tor over the past couple of days.

Didn’t really think much of H&D. Bit light, pretty insipid really. Little Wing was great though.

Re.ac.tor is bonkers. Absolutely mad. A 9 minute long song with a repeated lyric “mash potato”? Check. A song where Neil makes brum noises like a car? Check. Shots is amazing though and the sound of the band is great. Big noise.

Wondering if the next few weeks are going to be a slog.
