Think this one is a bit unfairly neglected. I don’t listen to it all that much, because when I get the need for a bit of the Horse I’ll always go to Ragged Glory and Weld first, but it’s still decent stuff. I’d say it was way better than Zuma, if Zuma didn’t have Cortez. It’s of a piece with Trans in that it’s from the period when Neil and Pegi were working relentlessly on a very demanding programme aimed at communicating with their son, and you can hear that frustration and focus in the record - it’s more wired and angsty than other CH albums, definitely feels like Neil wasn’t smoking as much weed during this time (although I doubt that). The only clunker here is Get Back On It, but at two minutes long that’s hardly a problem. I love the train rhythm of Southern Pacific (and that’s a song that found a whole new life with the International Harvesters when we get on to them in a few weeks), and Shots is classic NY. Digging this one out has probably been the highlight of this listening club so far, I’m not sure I knew how much I liked it.
Oh, and T-Bone is not long enough, That could go on for half an hour and I’d still be digging it. I love that Crazy Horse huddle where they all lock in on something and just focus on it relentlessly.
