With Mercury list out, I’ve gone through suggestions in this thread and made the start of a long list.

What’s missing and should be added to the long list? You have until Monday evening to suggest records for this list.

And are all of these albums eligible (I haven’t had chance to triple check nor grab all the album titles). Eligibility is based on same criteria as Mercury Prize

Albums by British or Irish artists released between 16 July 2022 and 14 July 2023 (inclusive) are eligible for the 2023 Mercury Prize.

  1. If you feel really passionate about an eligible record, give it a big up below

  2. I’ll take into account a range of factors and listen through create a shortlist of 12 albums next week which represents a range of genres, artist sizes, and areas of the country. The whole point of this “Prize” is to help surface albums people might not have heard yet.

  3. We’ll launch a poll. And I’ll promo it to our 7k email list subscribers and across Drowned in Sound’s social channels. It sometimes gets pick up from other media too.

Brigid Mae Power is missing from the longlist and would probably be my choice (after Lankum, which is on the actual list). Clearly I have a thing for Irish folk, but this manages to in turns be beautifully soft, totally raw, really melodic, occasionally eerie, always memorable. Takes lots of threads of traditional Irish music but weaves them into something new.

Also missing from longlist and worth a mention - H. Hawkline, Billie Marten.

The Murder Capital - Gigi’s Recovery

Fontaines meets Protomartyr, think this is a good step up from the last album. Captivating live

Ulrika Spacek - Compact Trauma

Jangly and twisty, a little 90s slacker, a little psych-rock, look forward to seeing them in a few months time

Rozi Plain and The Golden Dregs from the OP list for sure though, both around my top 5 of this year

Rozi does her usual folky indie groove, but with the addition of very cool synths, extra instrumentation, just gives a real depth to these pretty quiet songs. Get lost in it every time I stick it on

Golden Dregs just sounds stunning. Rich deep drawl, beautiful brass and woodwinds fleshing out vaguely soulful indie jams and gorgeous piano ballads. Lovely stuff, even better live too - American Airline is one of my tracks of the year too
