I’m up early and have some albums of interest to report
Gnoomes - Ax Ox
Excellent brew from a Russian group who describe themselves as “stargaze” - so obvs there’s shoegazey flavours, but also some kind of electronic pulsing stuff and thumping beats. Sounding great to me
Les Mamans du Congo & RROBIN - Kikento
Excited to have a new EP from this pairing, who made a great album together a few years ago. Airy modern electronic production with sweet female Congolese singing
Jen Cloher - I Am The River, The River Is Me
Cool songwritery rock from Melbourne. Not really necessary to mention she and Courtney Barnett used to be an item EXCEPT that she’s also quite a good musical touchpoint for reference.
Kali Uchis - Red Moon In Venus
I don’t love that much stuff in the RnB/Latin/Soul vein but Kali is amazing, really pleasing dreamy sound and loads of hooks
Fresh off an early AOTY contender with Rome Streetz, the mysterious Big Ghost is back on production for Che Noir’s first release of the year. Looking forward to this.
AJ Suede & Televangel - Parthian Shots
Last year’s Metatron’s Cube album from the pair found a number of fans on this here forum, so I’m probably not alone in hoping they’ve delivered the goods again.
Maze Overlay & Sadhugold - Afghani Gold
This is a good underground Hip-Hop album, Maze Overlay commits fully to the theme of the album & Sadhugold’s production deserves some shine.
Slowthai - Ugly
Album number 3 from the UK rapper. I’ve not listened fully yet but a few of the songs gave me vibes of Panic Prevention era Jamie T
Full Of Hell and Primitive Man - Suffocating Hallucination
Primitive Man play sludgy, abrasive doom. Full Of Hell play fast abrasive grindcore. This is a collaboration and I expect will be the nastiest thing you could listen to this week.
Mostly known for his instrumental work, BP puts out his first vocal album in seven years. FFO wordy but upbeat vocals & acoustic guitars drenched in atmospheric tape loops on a riverbank in the sunshine.
Underrated former Beta Band frontman’s new one. If the singles are anything to go by experimenting with Indian rhythms with his 6 music dad friendly indie pop.
Verde Prato - Adoretua
Spanish dreamy / electro / piano songs. Sounds very nice.
Nyokabi Kariuki - FEELING BODY
Kenyan composer and sound artist - experimental electronic music, ethereally vocal manipulations. FFO: Julia Holter and Eartheater.
Spektral Quartet, Juliet Holter, Alex Temple On March 3, 2023, Spektral Quartet, a multi-GRAMMY-nominated ensemble “obliterating the dividing line between past and present” (The New Yorker), and Julia Holter, a “haunting,” “mesmerizing,” and “mysterious” singer (Pitchfork), release Behind the Wallpaper. Composed by Alex Temple, whose gender transition inspired this stylistically unpredictable and mysterious new work, Behind the Wallpaper is “atmospheric with ambiguous tonality, drawing chuckles along with hushed curiosity.” (The New York Times)
Storefront Church - The Covers EP
5 track covers ep, with a rare (!) collaboration from Phoebe Bridgers, as well as Circuits des Yeux, Deafhaven, and Lauren Auder.
Skott - Roses N Guns
Scandi alt-pop. Really liked her last album.
