Sounds like he’s doing a gold rush prospector impression, complete with the sort of unexpected voice breaking falsettos. Could be just his real voice but probably isn’t.

Reckon it’s a bit of both, little bit of affectation doesn’t really hurt but it’s kind of marmite. Overall what I’ve heard here it lacks the huge gut punches of Lenker or Big Thief but I guess that’s expected, pretty inoffensive imho.

Yeah I’m enjoying it although his voice is an acquired taste, there’s a fun ramshackle energy to it.

His voice reminds me of Sam Amidon and has really grown on me with this album.

Also think he’s mixing a little Arthur Russell in his voice rather than outright country, he’s clearly a massive influence on all big thief. Ofc Russell himself was doing a bit of a country bit.
