Just realised I’ve been listening to it on shuffle by accident. Going back to the start!

Got the O2 presale through. Phew. I know everyone was really invested in me getting tickets.

The film is out now by the way, it’s equal parts beautiful and heartbreaking as one would expect from a Mike Mills/Alica Vikander/The National collaboration:

Got Brighton tickets :+1::sunglasses:

Ah too late. Got excited with the presale and clicked straight through. Perhaps a bit too urgent… not sure they’ll sell these venues out super fast? Maybe they will

Whole album really grew on me today, it’s all very… pretty? Really glad they did something different and didn’t stick a Turtleneck on there to ruin the flow.

Just bought tickets for Cardiff. If only that wasn’t 7 months away…

Well done.

Only heard two songs from the new one. One I didn’t like and one I really did.

Decided to revisit sleep well beast last night in preparation. Weird album. Strong start section, then the middle section is long and bloated, and then you think you’re on the home stretch and that drags on for ages too. A lot of these songs would have maybe worked as bsides but as a start to finish listen the album is a real slog.

I suppose in this day and age I should really make a playlist with the weaker songs trimmed but I’ve never done that sort of thing before and I don’t really want to start now.

Pitchfork review is out - only giving it a 7.6.

It’s not on Spotify yet so I’ll listen when it is but I think You Had Your Soul With You is an incredible song.

I don’t need to give this a score for my review (thankfully) but I’d say it’s about right, though I’d probably bump it up to an 8 (or 4/5). It’s definitely better/more interesting than Sleep Well Beast though

Agree. Where Is Her Head is my favourite as things stand, I think

Yeah that is probably my favourite too, Oblivions is also excellent.

I actually really liked Sleep Well Beast - was it not well received in some quarters?

I still like Sleep Well Beast, like any National album is has a handful of incredible tracks - ‘Guilty Party’ for instance - and I appreciate their attempt to do something different. It’s just they decided “so everyone’s happy with this one electronica beat we’ve written being all over the album aye?” and it made for kinda dull listening in places.

I like about half of it? The other half is so self indulgent, which would be fine if it wasnt so boring

When they move away from it, like karin at the liqueur store, it’s a great album, but I genuinely remember on 3rd or 4th listen when it came out, still getting hooks/choruses mixed up between some of the songs because they were so samey.

ya think ? I mean the motorpoint is terrible, but I don’t see how an arena 3 times the size is going to be any better…

Good lads

I went for a 9/10 for my review (I would have probably gone 8 for Sleep Well Beast). Really enjoyed the step outside their comfort zone on this one while retaining all the usual beauty. Where is Her Head is one of my favourites too, along with Quiet Light and Not In Kansas. Agree that the film is gorgeous, really brings out some themes within the record , would recommend anyone who likes the album gives it a watch.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite way about it - it starts off good but then the second half is where the magic is. Empire Line through Carin at the Liquor Store might be the best stretch they’ve done.

Me too. Originally I thought it was a half step below the others, but now I kind of think it’s their best one most of the time.
