I’ve always loved ‘Ceremony’ because it is a lovely transition between Joy Division and New Order. It sounds like Joy Division, but with a slight hint of optimism.

Raise the Pressure has a lot of good stuff on it

Must admit I’ve never listened to anything post Technique simply because I hated Regret so much (I know lots of people love it).

First 5 albums I adore though. Maybe I’m missing out. My rank would be:
Technique, PC&L, Movement, Low Life, Brotherhood
Substance has always been a bit mixed for me - I like dipping in for the singles but never really want to listen to it all the way through. Oh yeah love the 1981-82 E.P. which seems to act as a sort of transition between Movement & PC&L.

Yes, Movement is their best album, cheers.

Their best song

Maybe not a Lynyrd Skynyrd moment but Peter Hook is a very angry man.

For me that’s the worst one. I can’t think of a single song on that album that I actually like. The whole thing just blended into one big pile of blah for me. I remember being so disappointed when it came out, because I loved the first one so much.

He’s not in New Order any more. The massive twat.

Yes, and he’s not happy about it.

The best song in the whole JD/NO catalogue in fact, as well as being possibly the most beautifuly poduced record of all time.

Elgeria is their best song

I would also say ‘Procession’ has this quality. Somewhere between the two bands. It’s also my favourite New Order song.

Were Ceremony and Procession actually Joy Division songs? Demos recorded or at least played live? I think they were both released as singles before Movement (although I’m not certain tbh).

Not sure about Procession, but Ceremony was a Joy Division song I think. Pretty sure I heard of a version of it somewhere with Ian Curtis on vocals. There’s also two different New Order versions of it too. The version on Substance is a later cleaned up version.

There’s a live JD version of Ceremony on Still (or the Heart & Soul box set.)

Ha. Elegia is probably my favourite New Order track.

Even thought the two Substances were me and my mates’ introduction to the bands, I think the 7" mixes on Singles work a lot better.

GBOLs. Obviously the general consensus is patchy at best after Technique, but I reckon Music Complete is being seriously underrated here. Really think it’s up there with their best stuff, especially some of the extended mixes. I guess the contemporary production doesn’t have the ‘old modern’ vibe of their 80s stuff, but the songs themselves are top drawer. Also, another vote for Movement being a bit flat in comparison to what came after it.

For me: Technique > Low Life > Music Complete > PC&L > Brotherhood > Republic > Get Ready > Movement > WFTSC

Ceremony was written by Ian Curtis. Joy Division performed it live once and this recording is the one on Still. There is a JD studio recording, made a few days before Curtis died that is one of the last things they ever recorded (it’s on the Heart and Soul box set).

The New Order version is definitely the best one though.

Procession is definitely a New Order song though - written by Steve Morris apparently.

My m9’s given me a free ticket for their Ally Pally gig in a couple of weeks :+1: Anyone else going?

You are right about the voice and lyrics, best summed up by The Village I think

His voice just straining on the higher notes seems to work so well.

I’ve been back and listened to all of their 80s albums this afternoon and Brotherhood and Technique are the best 2.
