What’s on your radar this week?

Ariel Kalma, Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer - The Closest Thing to Silence

Been really looking forward to this one. New age ambient spirit Ariel Kalma meets mutual souls Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer whose ‘Recordings from the Aland Islands’ is one of my favourites of the last few years.

Vijay Iyer, Linda May Han Oh & Tyshawn Sorey - Compassion

US jazz pianist, who featured on Arooj Aftab’s ‘Love in Exile’, with a new album on ECM - the first with a new trio.

Burial - Dreamfear/Boy Sent From Above

New half hour EP which seems to have been brought forward a week.

Thought the new Brittany Howard was out today but google is lying to me. So will be watching this thread (and listening to the greatest pop punk album of all time - happy 30th birthday, Dookie!)

Liquid Mike - Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot

Rock guy from small-town Michigan. Stereogum’s AOTW.

J. Robbins - Basilisk

Former Jawbox/Burning Airlines frontman.

Yeah, this is gonna be great. American Caveman is a decent track

Ariel Kalma - The closest thing to silence. More electronic / ambient goodness.

Vera Sola - “Peacemaker”

2nd album and follow-up to “Shades”, my AOTY for 2018.

“With orchestral arrangements, excellent songwriting and an outstanding vocal delivery that masterfully combines influences ranging from Antonín Dvořák’s ‘New World Symphony’, which explores American history and landscapes, to the rawness of Tom Waits in the 1980s, her Southern Gothic style now gains an even more dramatic dynamism.” (Loud & Quiet).

The Last Dinner Party – Prelude To Ecstasy
Indie-rock / Progressive Pop

Debut album getting rave reviews…

Sky-high, grandiose ambition that ties together lofty literary sentiment, cinematic sweeping theatricality and killer melodic indie hooks with an equal affinity for each. – DIY

I’d love it if the title track was a riff on What Do I Do Now by Sleeper. Imagining it now, reckon it’d be great!

This seems to be a new album. Didn’t hear anything about it. Edit. It’s a soundtrack.

Vera Sola is the main one for me today, but enjoying this so far too:

plantoid - Terrapath

Hard to describe, so from the Norman Recs review (their best new album of the week):

Plantoid’s debut is an impressive offering that links the progressive, psychedelic, and experimental rock sounds of the 1970s and late 60s with the flair of contemporary post-punk groups. Over the course of Terrapath , the quartet somersault through a variety of moods, tempos, and dynamics, twisting their influences into a genre-melding ten track collection.

Kirin J Callinan - If I Could Sing
Has supported Alex Cameron. He is “an apex predator. A butterfly. A grassfire”, so yeah, FFO Alex Cameron.

Benni Hemm Hemm, Kórinn - Ljósið & ruslið
Icelandic chamber-poppish musician is back with another album, and this time with some kind of Icelandic choir collective I think.

Maria W Horn - PANOPTIKON
I always read her name as Maria With Horn. and then slightly disappointed that that’s not her name. Droney and acoustic instruments.

Manu Delago & Mad About Lemon - Snow From Yesterday
Handpan virtuoso Manu, now with added vocal choir.

Epic45 - You’ll Only See Us When The Light Has Gone
Maybe released on bandcamp last month, but streaming and physical this month. Dreamy indie.

Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard - Please, Wait
Baroque indie pop.

Ja, Panik - Don’t Play With The Rich Kids
Austrian/German art-indie-pop.

The Bony King of Nowhere - Everybody Knows
Belgian musician, melodic indie

Also looking forward to Vera Sola, and will give the Last Dinner Party a spin, although I’m not imagining I’ll listen to it much, despite initially liking Nothing Matters. Will see!
