Isn’t this a British forum? Shouldn’t someone be mentioning new British album releases by Theme Park, Clean Cut Kid, The Rifles (unplugged album), and obviously Kasabian and Slowdive?

It would appear that Animal Collective have a new EP out today. It’s under singles on Spotify. I’ll listen to it later and report back.

I’ll level with you, I’ve never listened to The Afghan Whigs, primarily because I’m generally not a fan of toupee related music, however I’m really liking this new album. I could well now have a frustrating clash with a sold out Bon Iver audience at Primavera. is it representative of their previous music?

Not blown away by perfume genius which is sad and his last one was a straight up classic for me

Their last album To Do The Beast is similar with some blinding songs (Parked Outside, The Lottery, It Kills and Can Rova). Their flat out classic is Gentlemen, which you’ll find a lot written about online. I have a real soft spot for Black Love, which sort of reverses the theme of Gentlemen so the narrator is more victim than culprit. It’s a soul-noir fusion of ace. Also for a more atmospheric version of this sound try the singer’s side project, Twilight Singers, specifically Blackberry Belle.

And I’m really liking the new one so far. I bought that and the new Forest Swords today, but I’ve gone four full listens on the Whigs so far and I’m not taking it off the turntable anytime soon. Sorry, Mr Swords.

I’d say it’s more indicative than representative, and that’s a good thing. The album is kind of like a hybrid of their last album “Do to the Beast” and some elements of the last Twilight Singers album “Dynamite Steps.”

“Do to the Beast” would probably be the safest place to start, especially if you like songs like “Arabian Heights” and “Copernicus” the most. It has some similar but more amped up songs (“Matamoros”, “The Lottery”, and “Royal Cream”). It might even be their third best album, which is pretty crazy.

If you like “Demon in Profile”, you might actually want to start with the album “Powder Burns” by his other band The Twilight Singers. It’s very similar to the song “Forty Dollars” off of that album. All of their albums are also great (and different from each other), and imo they were quietly one of the very best bands of the 00’s.

But as other people have said, “Black Love” and “Gentlemen” are masterpieces. I can’t emphasize enough how great these two albums are, and both contain two of the best vocal performances out there. Their original guitarist has a very unique style of playing and it fits the songs so well. Each of their other albums is great too, they just get overshadowed by these two.

Yeah I was talking to a friend over the weekend who was slightly disappointed saying that it wasn’t a very ambitious record and that it almost sounded like a parody of himself
 I argued that he had just refined his already great formula and that the more acoustic leanings on this album could point at what direction he might take next!
