New Releases 08/04/2022

This is a stacked week! No sign of Vince Staples yet but this is enough to keep me going:

Billy Woods & Preservation - Aethiopes

Highly anticipated first album since 2020’s BRASS from Billy Woods following a string of excellent albums of abstract East Coast rap. Boldy James, El-P and Quelle Chris amongst the guests.

Overmono - Cash Romantic

Techno drum’n’bass EP from the masters of the banger.

John Carroll Kirby - Dance Ancestral

5th album in 2 years for the prolific jazz keyboardist, featuring Laraaji and Yu Su as he takes his instrumental funk grooves in a more electronic direction.

Father John Misty - Chloë and the Next 20th Century

More expansive and arch baroque chamber pop from J Tillman, including a foray into bossa nova.

Wet Leg - Wet Leg

Much hyped muffin-buttering four-piece spoken word post-punk duo’s debut album.

Whatever The Weather - Whatever the Weather

Loraine James goes ambient

Daniel Rossen - You Belong There

Grizzly Bear multi-instrumentalist embraces free jazz in his debut solo LP.

Jack White - Fear of the Dawn

Former White Stripe still churning out solo material, first of two albums expected this year.

Orville Peck - Bronco

The MF DOOM and Brokeback Mountain mash-up you didn’t know you needed, this masked, proudly queer cowboy country album should be great - 2/3 of it has been out already in EP form and was already a step up from his previous work.

Banks - Serpentina

4th album of R&B electro-pop with Banks finally taking full creative responsibility on production.

Horace Andy - Midnight Rocker

Soulful dub reggae from the singer widely known for his vocals on Massive Attack’s One Love.

Širom - The Liquified Throne of Simplicity

Epic Slovenian “imaginary folk” songs on acoustic and often handmade instruments.

Nik Colk Void - Bucked Up Space

Layered instrumental noise, improvisation, and free sonic exploration from an artist better known as 1/3 of Carter Tutti Void or 1/2 of Factory Floor.

Son Lux - Everything Everywhere All at Once

49 track soundtrack to a a multiversal action movie based on a launderette’s financial audit and featuring Mitski, David Byrne, a flute-playing André 3000, Randy Newman and Moses Sumney.

Fergus Mcreadie - Forest Floor

Scottish jazz pianist follows up last ear’s Cairn with another album of nature inspired compositions.

Real Bad Man - On High Alert Vol. 4

Roc Marciano, Stove God Cooks, Rome Streetz and Rigz all rap on this beats tape from producer Real Bad Man.

Hiatus Kaiyote - Mood Variant

Exquisitely named remix album based on last year’s Mood Valiant.

Tanika Charles - Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly

Canadian Soul / R’n’B singer

Kush Jones - existing, do not desire to be perceived

This actually looks like its from last year but new up on streaming.

Oceanator - Nothing’s Ever Fine

Excellent slab of indie pop. Elise Okusam’s solo project from Manhattan. FFO grungy rock and poppy melodies. Along the lines of The Beths. Bad Brain Daze is a cracker

Good Looks - Bummer Year

Out on Keeled Scales, this is a collection of 7 tracks about how growing up in Texas has shaped band leader Tyler Jordan. It’s on Keeled Scales, so expect shimmery Americana tinged indie pop

Love Billy Woods so I’m straight in with that, thanks!

EDIT: doesn’t seem to have a co-writing credit for Preservation, does it?

Presume Wet Leg will be checked out a lot here and opinions on them will be somewhat hardened depending on whether you like them or not already.

The Regrettes album sounds like a big fun pop band.
The Linda Lindas’ debut album is out.
I loved Camila Cabello’s debut and will check out the new one too.

That’ll keep me busy as well as the ones that you guys will mention.

Romero - Turn it on!

Punky power pop from Melbourne

Think everyone has already mentioned all the stuff on my list, except for HEALTH’s latest album, DISCO 4 :: PART 2.

It’s pretty good. Scratching that itch The Beths’ melancholic second album didn’t scratch.

Vince Staples - ROMANA PARK BROKE MY HEART

Long Beach rapper follows up last year’s excellent self titled album.

Phew, thought it had been pushed back when it didn’t go up at midnight!

Pavement - Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal and Fergus McCreadie - Forest Floor for me. Might give Wet Leg a listen too.

Yeeesh, lot to get through today

Suicide - Surrender: A Collection

New collection spanning Alan Vega & Marty Rev’s forty year career.

Although the band barely received any credit during their career, Suicide are cited as one of the most inspirational bands of the 1970s, influencing the likes Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and The Jesus And Mary Chain.

Various Artists - Xkatedral Anthology Series I

XKatedral Anthology I is the first in a series of archival releases dedicated to presenting music by XKatedral affiliated composers working within the realm of slowly evolving harmonic and timbral music. Features Caterina Barbieri and Kali Malone, amongst others.

Egil Kalman - KINGDOM OF BELLS (EGIL KALMAN PLAYS THE SYNTHI 100)

Mind-bending solo debut of just intoned modular synth and double bass treks from Swedish player Egil Kalman, exploring borderlands between ancient drone, Scandinavian folk and experimental music horizons somewhere between Kali Malone, FUJI||||||||||TA and Keith Fullerton Whitman.

Terror Twilight is exciting, but today is mostly about new Calexico for me! :grinning:

Calexico - El Mirador

Was so close to being able to type all these up and wondering if I could include Calexico before anyone else, but @woweezowee just beat me! Looking forward to them, and Oceanator and Son Lux are on my list too. Other albums:

Bree Van Reyk - Superclusters
Australian percussionist instrumentals, with Mick Turner and Jim White playing on the songs also.

Renata Zeiguer - Picnic In The Dark
Nice dreamy kind of singer songwriter sounds. Will recommend it to @rich-t

Pauwel - Dear
Belgian solo artist, delicate low key bedroom pop, nice soft voice like he’s waiting for his voice to break, despite being 31.

Sontag Shogun & Lau Nau - Valo Siroutuu
US trio with Finnish strange music lady. Nice and dreamy.

Jordan Klassen - Glossolalia
Canadian acoustic Sufjan sounds with a sweet voice.

Mondo Cozmo - This Is For The Barbarians
Big feeling indie pop.

November Ultra - Bedroom Walls
Found her from looking through the Great Escape list of bands last week. Laidback bedroom indie pop.

Orions Belte & Oyvind Blomstrom - s/t
Norwegian psychedelic sounds maybe.
