Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi - They’re Calling Me Home

Excited for this one, their last album was a triumph. Folk songs old and new from Italy, America and beyond, an album that “speaks of the longing for the comfort of home as well as the metaphorical “call home” of death”.

Lots for me today. Balmorhea and Rhiannon Giddens both have new ones. Alela Diane live album is out. Of those mentioned above, Skullcrusher, Spirit of the Beehive and The Reds, Pinks and Purples too. And two entirely new ones to me: Tomemitsu (jangly, summery bedroom pop, I think) and Steiger (piano jazz but with all sorts going on, as far as I can tell).

This actually dropped yesterday, a soundtrack album jointly by Gazelle Twin and Max de Wardener which is a combination I’m very excited by (de Wardener’s Music for Detuned Pianos was my album of 2020).

Oooh, interested.

Nick Waterhouse - Promenade Blue

Feel like this should sound derivative and stale but it actually seems to be rather good - this is a record of 50s/60s soul and R&B tinged rock, with no hint of a modern twist on anything, but it just seems to have good song-writing and really good production.

Courting - Grand National

Imagine this short EP from a new Liverpool band will find a few fans here - 2 parts Parquet Courts to 1 part each Idles, Black Country New Road and Dry Cleaning.

This is really nice. A good mix of gentle post rock with moments of heavier outbursts.

Yeah reminded me of Serph a bit

Hard to describe this one - I guess a mixed bag of electronica and spoken word.

Southern-tinged garage rock

Hooveriii - “a six member band adept at creating their own brand of psychedelic space rock”

Merk - bedroom pop from New Zealand

Always. Her consistency so far has been very impressive though.

Came here to post exactly this. Been listening to it on repeat all morning. It’s great. So hard to describe what’s going on because there’s a lot happening, and the influences seem all over the place. I get a bit of a volcano! - beautiful seizures vibe from it, in that it’s really dense and surprising but flows together well. Volcano seems like a very dated reference but that’s the best I’ve got!

This is probably my favourite track so far:

Official release of what should have been the “first” Unsane album from 1989.

Enjoying “Perdona Mama” (EP? mini? It’s 9 tracks over 26 minutes, who knows?) from LISASINSON very much this morning. Punky uptempo indiepop from Valencia.

Spirit of the beehive for me Clive for some noisy glitchy indie pop rock

Sounds like animal collective death grips super fury animals and sufjan stevens had a jam session

New album by Norwegian metallers Arabrot. None of their stuff has has massively grabbed me so far but this sounds excellent on first listen. Seems to be more melodic and hookier than previous releases, bits of it sound like Gary Numan singing for Faith No More.

Wow this is fucking fab! Love it! Does anyone know where 8 can get hold of a vinyl copy? Norman doesn’t know it exists which is my normal searching avenues exhausted.

Here on their Bandcamp page, if you don’t mind paying £17 shipping!
