Yeah mixing him up with Walter Martin, will check this out thanks, liked his debut

Ian Svenonius’ solo project Escape-ism (Introduction to Escape-ism) is pretty funky. And I’m digging the retro Angel Olsen in Phases (I’m not particularly a fan of her’s otherwise).

@paulo13 - thanks for the tip. Enjoying Dillon - Kind. Sounds lie I must try out her debut

It’s a complete non-point though isn’t it? I can understand that you can’t really compare a ‘greatest hits’ type record with a collection of new material, but this is hardly that, is it?

Exactly half of the tracks are previously completely unreleased, most of the rest have only been available on very limited edition releases, a couple are b-sides from a pretty rare single. It’s safe to say that the vast majority of the tracks are completely new to the vast majority of people.

I don’t know what you mean when you say that it’s ‘not an album’ - it clearly is because it is presented as one by the artist. It would be strange to assume that ‘album’ is a term you can only use when an artist goes into a studio for a defined amount of time with the intention of recording 12 songs together to be releaed together. That has never been the exclusive case and it certainly isn’t now.

Same here. Been quite happy to listen to it on a loop for the past few days. Though I think the past two albums were good I didn’t have the same reaction. Might go back and trim them down into 6/7 song eps like this and see if I get more out of them.

Excellent, glad you checked it out and liked her! I’m still enjoying the new album, although I’d have liked it if it was a tad bit longer.
Her debut album had a sort of half-cover of a Jens Lekman song, which was a bonus surprise for me. It’s also one of those nice albums where I find it hard to pick my favourite song.

@paulo13 - man, you are on a roll today! That Spirit Fest is pretty darned good too. Now I have a heap of Notwist and Tennicoats to look into. Cheers, Bud!

Lol alright m8

It’s a collection, not an album, most of it was on Spotify already. Anyway, it’s good.

I think what, for some reason that I simply cannot fathom, you keep trying and failing to say is that it’s not a “studio album”. It’s still an album.

Ok w/e does it matter

It’s too early to tell. Maybe discobot can help.

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

I was actually thinking about starting a thread about this topic (what makes an album of b-sides an album or not). For example, Pisces Iscariot by the Pumpkins and Building Nothing out of Something by Modest Mouse are 100% proper albums to me, whereas Judas O by the Pumpkins and Lost Dogs by Pearl Jam aren’t, and New Moon by Elliott Smith is somewhere in between.

I think it has something to do with how retrospective it is and how widely available the material is otherwise.

For instance I think Hatful of Hollow has a right to be considered as an album even though it wasn’t recorded as one - all the songs were recorded over a period of about 15 months and a lot of the songs and almost all of the recordings are unique to it. It was released shortly after the songs were recorded. It’s clearly different from an end of career ‘greatest hits’ type record.

Lots of ‘albums’ are recorded over a long period of time and include lots of tracks that have been previously released but we still think of them as albums.

In the end a lot of it comes down to how they are titled and presented. Phases is definitely presented as an album to my eyes.

Iv’e just heard about Mr. Thundder from a blog and I really enjoy his music. This is REAL music that speaks real sound, authenticity, originality and creativity. When you listen to the music you definitely get that sense of togetherness, respect and love in the community. Like his song Joyful that says quote “Study love you’ll pass the test of life” . He is the realist artist out. Very, very charming and handsome.

Those are really good points and pretty much explain the albums I mentioned. The songs on Pisces Iscariot and Building Something out of Nothing all came from or seem like they could have come from the same time period, whereas Judas O covered a very busy six year period and included material that had been key components of prior releases. New Moon is pretty much an actual album too, I think the only hangup I may have is that he didn’t sequence it himself.

check out the new Machine Translations album

he’s an Australian guy, hasn’t put anything out for awhile I think - i think this is in the ballpark of Beck / Badly Drawn Boy et al - check him out, good album!
