Bill Ryder-Jones - Iechyd Da
This one’s probably on a few folks’ lists today. I’ve only heard one pre-release track so far, but it was very nice.
Nailah Hunter - Lovegaze
Debut album from the multi-instrumentalist and composer, “mystical folk and ambient-inspired music”. I think / hope this will be good.
ELLIOTT ARMEN - Turbulence
Pastoral folk, Sufjan and Elliott Smith-esque.
Winter Aid - Inner Sunset EP
Sad Irish indie folk.
Susie Ibarra, Jeffrey Zeigler, Graham Reynolds - INSECTUM
An experimental/neo-classical/ambient/jazzy/buggy album about insects. I can’t say that it’s one that I want to return to (or even listen the whole way through), but it’s different!
Emma Gatrill - Come Swim
Harpy, synthy, indie folk. Apparently she’d asked other friends/musicians to send her some drum beats for her to start to write songs to based on those, instead of starting with her harp. Has Conor O’Brien/Villagers, Rozi Plain, and Kate Stables/This Is The Kit, Rachel Horwood/Bas Jan and Rachael Dadd guesting on it.
This is good and a lot poppier than the description makes it sound. Reminds of parts of the ANOHNI album and Sigur Ros circa Kveikur, but with some really catchy songwriting.
Loveblaster - The Way Things Work
This came out last week, but just come across it now. Slowcore with lovely delicate vocal melodies. Reminds me of Low on the first song.
Rapper with divisive flow over pretty dusty, sometimes soulful sometimes dark beats. Liked him when he’s popped up on features with some current indie rap favs, not sure about a whole album though …
Blu - Best Lyricist Underground (2007-2022)
Sprawling hour-long comp of early work (I think) by another melodic low-key indie rapper
Australian indie/jangle pop. Saw them play a nice set at Great Escape last year. Reminds me of early Two Door Cinema Club and other such things. Summery (of course).
