Chihei Hatakeyama - Thousand Oceans

Guitar-based Ambient/Drone/Field Recordings from Japan. Absolutely stunning album art, for whatever that’s worth.

John Grant - The Art Of The Lie

You know John Grant, you know the deal. Everyone’s favourite cuddly cynic with a voice like honey returns with an album full of emotional theatrics and cinematic sound. Imagine ā€œthe Carpenters if John Carpenter were also a memberā€.

I’ll have a µ-Ziq Cola please.

Skee Mask - Resort

Ok, so this came out yesterday, because Ilian Tape do what they want I guess. Still, it’s another intricately designed Ambient Techno offering from the bafflingly wonderful Skee Mask, and it’s excellent.

This ilIs Lorelei - Box for Buddy, Box for Star

New album from the solo project of Water From Your Eyes front person Nate Amos. Expect the kitchen sink and more thrown at this, landing somewhere between Kero Kero Bonito and 100 gecs. Is Stereogum’s aotw

I keep thinking I’ll rein it in and just listen to a few selected releases, but they keep on releasing loads of intriguing albums, don’t they? µ-Ziq, This is Lorelei and Julie Christmas already mentioned. Also:

Isobel Campbell - Bow To Love

Glasgow (now in LA, I think) singer-songwriter and cellist, formerly of Belle & Sebastian and three great collaborative albums with Mark Lanegan, with this latest album of (if the pre-release tracks are a good guide) floaty, hazy tracks, which remind me of Dot Allison’s last couple of albums.

Blacklisters/BLKLSTRS - This Is Not An Album

Not sure whether the album title is a reference to Magritte or PiL or something else but, album or not, there are 10 tracks of noise rock here from the Leeds/Berlin band who seem to have both vowelled and consonant-only versions of their name. Enjoyed this one.

小ēŽ‹XIAOWANG - KACHAKACHA

Debut album from Beijing alt-rock/kawaiicore four-piece.

FrƤulein - Sink Or Swim

Mini-album from London garage rock duo. Sounding very promising - reminds me a bit of early PJ Harvey at times.

Walt Disco - The Warping

I like this so far too. Campy, Bowie-esque theatrical synth-pop by Glasgow five-piece exploring gender identity and fluidity on this album.

British Murder Boys - Active Agents & House Boys

ā€œTheir long awaited but entirely unexpected debut full length album finds Child and O’Connor take somewhat of a departure from the heavy Industrial sound they originally made their name on from 2003-2005, but the album is no less murderous. Across 8-tracks the duo have delivered a stripped back return to the raw sound of the ā€˜90s warehouse sceneā€.

Martha Skye Murphy - Um

I think this could be a winner too. Chamber pop-ish album on AD93, combining ā€œmoments of baroque beauty with crashes of electronic noiseā€ featuring guest appearances from Roy Montgomery and claire rousay.

Ebbb have their debut EP out today on Ninja Tune. Saw them supporting Lost Girls and was really impressed. Sort of dreamy experimental electronic pop. Lots of falsetto vocals, pulsing rhythms and twinkling electronics.

Ebbb - All At Once EP

Enjoying this too, warbly shoegazy garage indie, a more confessional/tortured early Demarco sound.

NxWorries - Why Lawd?

Probably the most I’ve looked forward to an Anderson .Paak release since the last NxWorries. Haven’t heard any singles yet so going in fresh

The long-awaited second album from NxWorries – the iconic duo of superstar vocalist Anderson .Paak and Grammy Award-winning beatmaker and producer Knxwledge. 8 years after their breakthrough debut Yes Lawd! , NxWorries return with Why Lawd? – a winning combination of Knx’s unmistakeable beats and .Paak’s instantly recognizable vocals. This time, special guests are invited along for the ride. Featured artists include H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, Earl Sweatshirt, Rae Khalil and more.
