Connor youngblood sounds pretty nice on first listen. Lots of reverby piano and floaty production

Really loving the new Mitski.

I broadly agree that there’s nothing that reaches the heights of the previous two (on first listen…), but I definitely think it’s probably a lot more consistently great

Probably one for the heavy music thread but for folks into Death Metal this is out today and pretty great.

Jamie T snuck out a b-sides comp today. Haven’t heard most of them, so I’ll be giving it a listen…

Yeah there are definitely some questionable stylistic choices in there. Like having the synth in Geyser starting really loud, dropping right down and then building up again is really shit. Probably seemed like a great idea in theory but all it means is that when I queue the album to follow something quieter from the pre-2000s (which I’m doing quite a lot with 80s hip-hop atm) I just get deafened.

There’s another point at like track 3 or 4 where it sounded like it’s been deliberately recorded to sound tinny but it doesn’t quite work for me.

After 2-3 listens I definitely like enough of it to persevere but I agree with those above who say it lacks a Happy or Your Best American Girl-style showstopper. Think Nobody is supposed to fill that role but doesn’t have a strong enough chorus.

Sounds interesting

Surprised at the reaction to Mitski here, I absolutely love it. I reckon it sounds more ‘fun’ than her previous albums and could see it being her most accessible.

New Protomartyr/Spray Paint split single is ace, also very much enjoying Smote Reverser.

Certainly wouldn’t dispute this

Def gonna give this a listen. Seems to just be b-sides missing from Spotify rather than a comprehensive collection.

Would love him to do a studio album of acoustic renditions of some of his best stuff.

Now on my 3rd or 4th spin of Mitski, through my speakers now and definitely warmed to it. Closing track is a beauty

He’s had one of the weirdest career trajectories for such a hyped artist

Think he went through quite a hard time for a few years between the second and third album and lost some momentum. Recently re-listened to Kings and Queens and it was such a joy.

Yeah I never could find out what happened there, could you shed any light on it for me? I remember there being a fight or assault or something but otherwise nothing.

Fire Fire was a jam too

Second listen of Mitski: Washing Machine Heart and Lonesome Love are proper bangers. Two Slow Dancers up there with her very best. She really is great at album closers.

Brilliant album.

I’ll give it more listens over the weekend.

Hadn’t actually read that Mirror article but heard about the fight. His dad was seriously ill at the time and I think that, plus a bad, transatlantic break up coupled with his older anxiety issues just froze him for a few years. Apparently when he finished his third album and called up his old manager to see if his deal was still valid they hadn’t spoken in years, so I think he’d fully fallen off the grid.
