Lauren Auder - The Infinite Spine
I’ve been really looking forward to this debut album since seeing her live five years ago, and the few EPs that have been released since. Sounds lovely on my first listen. Nice review from Loud and Quiet: “Dipping her toes into non-algorithmic chamber psych and PC Music, her woozily self-guessing baroqueness cites the rich fragility of Scott Walker, fixated on Christian allegory and pagan symbolism.”

Thanks for starting us off. Could you put the newmusicfriday tag on, for those of us who use that?

My favourite new artist in a long time has an EP^. Circe worked with Steven from Blood Red Shoes on this and it has such a dreamy groove to it all, a little like Metric and Bat for Lashes collaborating. Definitely one for fans of Lorde and Patrick Wolf. Her voice has a little bit of that Cranes and Sundays magic.

^ = 7 tracks so could be a mini album

Dorotheo - Nada Escrito

Haunting electro from Guadalajara. Their third album. Fans of Broadcast or Stereolab might like this.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - City of Gold

Bluegrass/Americana. Been looking forward to this one with Molly Tuttle’s guitar picking and voice sounding as great as ever, along with the tight Golden Highway band, and Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show co-writing the songs with Tuttle.

Guided By Voices - Welshpool Frillies

GBV with their thousandth album of hooky, oddball mid-fi indie

Upper Wilds - Jupiter

An upbeat, hooky blast on the basis of the first few tracks. FFO GBV & Oh Sees maybe?

Nas - Magic 2

FFO rap legends actually doing decent work a few decades into their careers

Strange Ranger - Pure Music

They started out as very raw indie, with elements of newer wave emo and Modest Mouse in there - but seem to have shifted to more electronics and vocal manipulation from what I remember of the later albums. So, be interesting to see where they’ve ended up now

He gets so little press, it’s infuriating. My Finest Work Yet was brilliant and seemed to do pretty well but this and his last album sort of just popped up out of nowhere.

Mizmor - Prosaic

Metal somewhere in the gap between black and doom metal. Stereogum had a nice write up on it

Must be one of the most consistently quality artists working at the moment

Haven’t seen him in over a decade! Really hope he does another tour soon, talked myself out of seeing him the last few times for no good reason

Saw him in 2009 on the Noble Beast tour. Was so good. Went alone as a nervous 17 year old but worth it
