Lots of new releases for me today - 29 artists, but am slimming down that list by about half. Here’s a first batch.
Youth Lagoon - Rarely Do I Dream
Dreamy laid back alt-indie.
Albertine Sarges - Girl Missing
Art-pop, German musician back with her second album.
Califone - The Villager’s Companion
Alt-americana, ‘reverb-drenched piano chords, electronic whirs, and layers of experimental noise’.
Saya Gray - SAYA
Art-pop, seems a bit more melodic than her previous album maybe.
Kelora - Sleepers
Dream-pop / Ambient-pop
I’ve started a new vocal project called No Slugs. The only musical act with a ‘no slugs’ guarantee.
First track of electronic misery pop is out today. ‘The No Slugs Spa’ draws inspiration from a game I play with the kids where a spa’s main selling point is the (current) absence of slugs. Maybe also a thinly-veiled metaphor for the insipid offerings of notionally left-wing political parties in response to the rise of the right.
Abduction - Existentialismus
Fifth full length from the Derby black metal band
New Tim Hecker but the kids won’t let me listen to it
Been looking forward to this one. Last record was a cracker
Sam Fender - People Watching
3rd album from the geordie Bruce Springsteen, produced by your man from War on Drugs. Not a major departure from his previous albums on first listen but starts and ends with a pair of massive tunes.
Wren - Black Rain Falls
Sludge / post metal.
My vinyl copy of this turned up yesterday. It’s really very good.
Rapt - Until the Light Takes Us
London based one time bassist of black metal band Enslavement. The singer songwriter’s 5th album of folk/slowcore/ambient soundscapes.
You should cover The Fall’s No Bulbs and change the lyrics to No Slugs in this spa
Youth Lagoon, Hecker and Baths - sure is a good day for artists I enjoyed circa 2012 (and maybe still do!)
Soundtrack for the new film about the mysterious new wave icon, a seeming greatest hits of sorts of recovered archives and suchlike.
Goodbye Horses is such an all timer tune its worth checking out just for that but bet theres a few gems here.
Q Lazzarus - The many lives of Q Lazzarus
All Seeing Dolls - Parallel
Collaborative album between Dot Allison (One Dove) and Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), recorded remotely in Berlin and Scotland during lockdown. Psych-folk-dream-pop or something: downtempo with shoegazey wall of sound build-ups and Allison’s haunting vocals like early Lush.
My remaining ones:
Iosonouncane - Lirica Ucraina
The type of music that my partner tells me to turn off as it’s ‘anxiety music’.
FFO of anxiety music.
Jim Ghedi - Wasteland
Yorkshire folky artist. Has toured with / FFO Lankum and Richard Dawson. Lovely emotional/haunting strings from the couple of songs I’ve listened to.
Jules Reidy - Ghost/Spirit
“Reidy’s breathtaking recordings and magnetic performances offer a truly futuristic, singular vision of guitar music. Explorations of microtonal mysticism and alternate tunings drawn from transcendental folk and minimalism color Reidy’s playful experiments with smudged pop melodics and sampling.”
Maruja - Tir na nÓg
‘post-rock, jazz, and noise rock’ apparently, but I think I like this EP despite that.
Naima Joris - Enjoy The Silence
Really liked a previous album of hers, melancholic voice/sound, like a sad humourless Aldous Harding. This one looks to be a cover album, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, Nick Drake and others.
Ralph Heidel - anyways.ontobetterthings
German multi-instrumentalist, lowkey orchestral sounds. Has Douglas Dare and a few other folk guesting on some songs.
Joan Thiele - Joanita
Italian language contemporary pop.
Brilliant so far. Loving Chin Up
This is sounding lovely. Didn’t realise they had a new one out today, thanks. Gloomerald is a favourite of mine.
Anxious - Bambi
Emo
Damon Locks - List of Demands
Actually a January release but wasn’t picked up as International Anthem always delay streaming by 3 weeks.
Experimental jazz improvisation, sample based hip hop, punk, and poetry. Highly recommended.
