I know it’s all about The Smile today and I’ll be down to Rough Trade to pick up my copy but New Model Army have their new one out, a band that will always be close to my heart. It continues their resurgence since Between Dog And Wolf back in 2013. Who else is writing songs about the Post Office scandal, fucking Idles?
Such an epic day for new releases I had to book the day off work!
Seems to be under the radar with everything else out today but looking forward to diving into this
Only a single for now, but the promise of a new album later this year has got me very excited. First new music from alt-art-rock Adult Jazz in 8 years.
Alkaline Trio - Blood, Hair And Eyeballs
Pop punk for goths, spooks and romantics.
Lucifer - Lucifer V
70s style occult rock, acid trip jams and moderately spooky vibes. Lots of Hammond organ. If you enjoy Green Lung but wish they were 1000x sillier you might dig this.
Static-X - Project Regenration Vol 2
Nu metal fronted by a person who wears a mask and wig to make them look like their previous singer (RIP Wayne). Only really posting this to highlight how fucked up that is.
Latin jazz. Collaboration between the 7-string guitarist and soprano saxophonist
“We were making music that we had a real mutual appreciation for,” do Nascimento said. “I was always joking that Sam should play flute, and he tried multiple things before he got this unique [flute] sound out of his soprano. Most people don’t actually realise that it’s a saxophone.”
One for the jazz flute fans too then! Edit: pretty much unmistakably sax all the way through, but it was quoteworthy.
Mackenzie Scott’s sixth album of arty indie rock. By all accounts less crunchy and catchy than Thirstier, but still more stadium-ready than Sprinter. Middling reviews so far, but I’ll still be giving this a few listens on the strength of her voice and back catalogue.
I love her and don’t think she’s made a bad album. Shame if it’s getting weak reviews. I think Three Futures is her best tbh but I’m pretty sure that lost her the label support
Alkaline Trio’s first album since 2018, their first album since Matt was kicked out of Blink and therefore properly able to contribute to the writing process. For me it’s the best thing they’ve done in 11 years but for others it may well be their best since 2003’s Good Mourning.
Proper riffs, belting choruses on even the weakest songs, and Dan Andriano - for all his brilliance as a writer - rightly relegated in favour of Skiba’s often corny but oh so fitting vocals and spoopy lyrics.
