Skinny Pelembe - Hardly the Same Snake
Somewhere around the soul/hip-hop/jazz/electronica intersections, this is the Doncaster (originally Johannesburg) artist’s second album. Had a pretty ordinary review in Loud & Quiet but it’s sounding good to me so far.
The Orb - Prism
Heard the radio edit of the very enjoyable dub-steppy Living In Recycled Times track and was surprised to discover it was by The Orb, who are back with this 18th studio album of dubby, housey ambienty stuff.
Avalon Emerson - & The Charm
Big departure from the techno producers usual sound with this album of wistful dream pop.
Baba Ali - Laugh Like A Bomb
Dark disco synthy electro. London duo’s second album. Kinda electroclash - makes me wistful for that scene anyway.
Baby Rose - Through and Through
R&B. Great low soulful voice.
Shangri-Lass - Over & Over EP
Rose Love from Sister Wives with this solo psych synthpop EP from here in Sheffield. For fans of Stealing Sheep. Or Sister Wives, natch.
Various Artists - DJ-Kicks: Elkka
“As the next curator of DJ-Kicks, Elkka is voyaging through rave euphoria”. This came out on Wednesday.
3rd volume of Crime’s “You Don’t F*** With Crimeapple?” albums/EP’s 1 & 2 were both good so looking forward to this one. Expect Braggadocio rapping, with street tales in a mix of English & Spanish on top of Boom Bap beats.
Daringer - 348
A collection of instrumentals by the Griselda affiliated producer. This was released physically earlier in the year but has only just hit streaming services today.
Yungmorpheus - From Whence It Came
First release of the year for the experimental Rapper/producer on Lex Records.
One of the year’s most exciting releases for me, Bleached Wavves was one of the best shoegaze debuts I’ve heard in recent memory and the follow-up’s here after three years.
Also if you’re fancying it, off-kilter prog pop from a Belgian group signed to MGMT’s label
4 weeks late with this one, he must have had a few more since then. Enjoyed this and the other records he’s had out this year, though to be fair it’s telling that the best song is as usual the one featuring YOD.
After blowing me away at unsound Basta releases an ambient album filled with organic sounds. Drifting and gorgeous. Very excited for this one. Start your morning with this:
New Jan Jelinek. The master of jazzy ambient things. His stuff is always worth a listen
