This is band I’ve heard about for years but never bothered listening to them. Found an hour today while I was doing the ironing and kind of liked it. My Morning Jacket / Midlake / other band I also haven’t listened to for years.
Local Psycho and The Hurdy-Gurdy Orchestra - The Hurdy-Gurdy Song
This is Jimmy Cauty (KLF, etc) in collaboration with Jem Finer who made a great Hurdy-Gurdy album last year (called Hrdy-Grdy). Along with making this “acid house barn dance” single, they also stood a 3.5 tonne standing stone in Sussex and held a May Day event to ‘encode the music in the stone’s atomic structure’. Brilliant.
The Hurdy Gurdy Song is a deep drone heard through time.
It is a masterpiece of psycho-cosmology that fuses the ancient music of the British Isles
with the frenetic sound of the present.
It is the sound of euphoria and melancholia, locked together in constant battle that
neither wants to win.
It is an elemental sound, like a sped up version of this country’s weather.
It is an anthem of disruption, of playful provocation and sonic sedition.
It is relentless and restless, like all good music should be.
It sings down through all eternity, the crying of humanity.
It channels the two greatest forms of folk music this country has produced: that of the
peasant’s lyre and drum’n’bass.
Proper listens to the Nabihah Iqbal record. I’d always prefer a little more shoegazey stuff, but it’s absolutely brilliant. Might just have to check out everything Ninja Tune put out, to be safe.
Sorry if mentioned, but think it just released today.
Not The Baby - Prima Queen
First EP from these I think. Heard Back Row on 6music and thought it was cool, but already listened to the EP three times over in the last half hour, really like it.
