Rose Droll - With Strangers
According to my To Investigate music spreadsheet, I first came across her in 2018 and loved the song I heard enough to give it a 9/10. It looks like I maybe missed that album at the time, but she’s finally made a second one, and it sounds really promising so far. Plus, Caroline Rose seems to be liking all of her Instagram posts, so FFO Caroline Rose.

Donna Blue - Into The Realm Of Love
Dutch duo, influenced by Serge Gainsbourg and Ennio Morricone, dreamy cinematic music.

Anamoe Drive - Breakfast in Bed
Irish musician, apparently from grunge punk band Thumper. “lo-fi indie meets alt folk”

Marry Waterson & Adrian Crowley - Cuckoo Storm
I love Adrian’s voice. Here’s a blurb:

Jasmine Wood - Piano Reverb
Piano reverb recordings from a 100 year old piano recorded in a vacant church in Ireland,

Ameli Paul - Through the Haze

This definitely doesn’t sound like the kind of thing I would like at all, but I really quite like the first three songs from this German duo’s mini album so far.

Soap&Skin - Des Teufels Bad
S&S stars in, and has written the soundtrack, for an upcoming Austrian movie which is a “punishingly bleak but mesmerizing portrait of female depression in 18th century Austria and the sins of religious dogma that persist to this day.”
The soundtrack definitely sounds quite haunting, but maybe too much for me to want to listen to too much.

Diane Cluster Diane - Diane Cluster Diane
Dreamy French indie pop. Came across them by accident last year whilst searching on Spotify for Diane Cluck.

Didn’t know this was coming. Enjoyed their last one. Good stuff.

looks like it’s going to be part of an album release in the near future, celebrating 20 years of them as a band, so I’ll hold off until listening to it until then. Although I think it’s reworkings of old songs, so it might not be too much of a spoiler for me!

indeed

certainly a lot less lo-fi

A few others:

Tomato Flower - No

FFO Of Montreal, early Animal Collective

Slow Hollows - Bullhead

Former Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator collaborator sounds nothing like them, mellow, country tinged indie rock:

New judas priest? Oh go on then

Championed this lad a few times on here, love his voice. Proper old fashioned sadlad country, recorded live.

Grace Petrie - Build Something Better

Difficult to imagine a less enticing sell to the wary than “lefty folkie produced by Frank Turner” but she’s been doing the graceful protest song better than most for years now.

Good thing I wasn’t expecting much. It’s pretty, but it’s essentially 30 minutes of shrug and then the last two songs. No big bangers, which is even more evident when Houdini and Von Dutch were the first two songs played by the algorithm afterwards.

Imperfect For You was the clear standout on first listen. Yes, and? bangs by comparison to pretty much everything else but it’s so weak (especially the chorus)

All that said, i was expecting it to try and be a Renaissance rip off, which also isnt my bag, so i guess I’m glad it’s this instead

The sound of this is amazing but a little disappointing that it’s almost entirely instrumental (even though I know it’s a soundtrack). If this was a proper Soap&Skin record with vocals over this instrumentation it would have been incredible.

Listening again.

  • It’s just overproduced for my liking. There are some nice flourishes or moments but they’re a bit lost in the mix because it’s all so shiny. I prefer when her vocals feel more dominant over the backing
thats part of why it feels a bit samey i think. I dont have the musical knowledge or know how to articulate what I mean but everything feels like it’s on the same level and it’s not sonically pleasing, it’s a bit muddy. I need the vocals up here, some parts of the backing way down there, and other parts in the same place so it feels richer and more impactful

  • However a few songs are standing out more - I like the one-two of Eternal Sunshine and Supernatural (latter is a bit mid but it’s decent enough). Yes, And? despite being so meh on arrival is a real shot of adrenaline for the album when it comes in

  • Imperfect For You still easily my favourite track. It’s gorgeous and the mix is so much better for me personally. Such a shame there isn’t more of this on the album!

I do think this is her weakest album apart from Yours Truly (which isn’t to my personal taste, but every other Ari fan seems to love it. The Way does nothing for me
). Positions disappointed me but had some clear tunes and POV is the most gorgeous song shes ever released, Sweetener has some great songs but they aren’t in the right order. Sadly i can’t see myself buying this or returning to it as an album beyond tbe individual tracks I save to my favourites.
