🦃 New Releases - 8 Sep 23 🦞

Quite a few new releases today, but just starting by posting about three bands who I love and hope that their new albums will nearly match my high expectations.

Sparklehorse - Bird Machine
I imagine this will (rightly) be a very popular album today. So happy that a new posthumous album of Sparklehorse music has come out, even if it will be mixed emotions listening to it.

Spirit Fest - Bear In Town
What’s almost as good as an album from The Notwist? A Spirit Fest album - ‘supergroup’ of The Notwist and Japanese band Tenniscoats. Lovely sweet little sounds that always sounds perfect to be played as a small gig in your living room.

Team Me - Return To The Riverside
Alt eurphoric orchestral indie pop band from Norway. Looking forward to seeing them live again for the first time in ages in November.

I’m excited for the Chemical Brothers album, thought the last one was a career high and I’m hoping they can sustain that

The Homesick - S/T

Dutch post-punk band, formerly on SubPop

Kristin Hersh - Clear Pond Road

The big one for me today. Solo acoustic alt-rock from Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave almost 30 years on from Hips and Makers. This is either her 11th or 12th solo album (depending on whether you count Speedbath).

Allison Russell - The Returner

Soulful pop and Americana on the Nashville-based Scottish Grenadian Canadian artist’s second solo album. Great voice.

Coach Party - KILLJOY

Isle of Wight indie rock four piece. They’ve got a few tunes, judging by the pre-release tracks.

Deeper - Careful!

Post-punk. Chicago four-piece who I think have some of the early Cure records in their collection.

Optic Sink - Glass Blocks

Minimalist synthy post-punk, quite poppy. A trio from Memphis, Tennessee. Their second album. $1 on Bandcamp.

Sylvester - Private Recordings, August 1970

Early recordings from the Queen of Disco. A few years before his disco hits, Sylvester was part of drag troupe The Cockettes. These recordings from 1970 with Cockettes pianist Peter Mintun showcase their love of early jazz, blues and gospel. This collection was released on the 6th September, what would have been Sylvester’s 76th birthday and proceeds will go to the two charities that Sylvester left his royalties after his death: Project Open Hand and PRC (formerly AIDS Emergency Fund).

Public Service Broadcasting, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jules Buckley - This New Noise

Newly remixed version of the BBC centenary celebrating Prom concert from August 2022

Various Artists (Tru Thoughts) - Shapes: Collide

Latest compilation from the Brighton electronica, funk, hip-hop and jazz label.

Matthew Halsall

Mellow, spacey jazz

Yussef Dayes

Amazing jazz drummer. Sometimes fast and fusionsy, sometimes all about the vibes. Nearly always very, very good

Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
Banging pop music. Singles were great. Good for her.

Kvelertak - Endling
Banging metal, think Thin Lizzy style dual guitars mixed with Mastodon. A joyous band.

James Blake - Playing Robots Into Heaven

Dubstep breakout turned super-producer turned balladeer returns to his roots with an album of sample-based electronica. I’ve enjoyed the singles so looking forward to getting stuck in.

Body in the Thames - Disconnect Yourself

An overwhelmed individual attempts to pacify their tetchy internal monologue over the noise of the digital psychosphere

Conway the Machine - Speshal Machinery

Moody and confident, ranging from gangster rap to much more soulful beats - from one of the best around

Courtney Barnett - End of the Day

Very quiet, minimal instrumental soundtrack from her recent documentary

Romy - Mid Air

Debut album by Romy from the xx.

Conceived as a “love letter” to the queer clubs where London-born Romy blossomed as a teenager, it’s a nostalgic but box-fresh dance album that taps into a deep well of feeling.

Now there’s a band I’ve not thought of in a long time. One of their songs has had more than 75 million listens??

Loads today…but I will just be listening to Sparklehorse on repeat I think, quite incredible to have a new album to explore.

New single from Eurovison fan faves Teya and Selena

Already coming to the end of my 2nd Sparklehorse play.

Absolutely love it, with the caveat of a weight of sadness in having lost such a great musician so early.
