Hey everyone! Hope your Monday is awesome. I’m down 2lbs this week which is good and making me feel alright mentally-wise. I’ve decided this month I’m gonna lose 2lb a week and eat regular meals which is hard when I’m working a lot of nights where I love to eat EVERYTHING. What do you guys snack on? I thought I’d take like a little snack box with me and when everyone’s chowing down on bombay mix I’ll crack that out.

What is your reason for doing it though? Nutrition? Cause I think it’s only benefit is shedding a shit load of weight.

Cutting out carbs like that is going to make you very tired which is not really going to be beneficial for your rides and you’ll probably get sick cause you’re not really getting all the nutrients you really need.

I would seriously think about doing it cause it’s gonna fuck with your body and I can’t see it being necessary unless you’re wanting to shed a few stone quickly. It’s a crash diet.

I’m loving the no booze life so far but I can’t say I was a huge huge drinker beforehand. Just 2 glasses of prosecco or a few glasses of wine of a weekend, never getting drunk (apart from the DiS meat).

I definitely feel I look “trimmer”.

On long bike rides I struggle to consume enough carbs to keep me going. I have read loads of stuff about how you actually don’t need to eat much during these endurance events if you’re keto as your body doesn’t need the carbs to immediately fuel as you’re using your fat stores instead. I’m not really thinking about the shorter events but my goal this year is something really long and I’m just thinking ahead to my fueling strategy, but I don’t think it’s really doable for me tbh. I like beer and pizza too much and as @Matt_was_taken said: bread machine.

If I eat enough protien then I don’t need to snack, so maybe take a look at that first off. 2lbs a week is pretty tough going by the way (harking back to my days when I was obsessed with slimming and won slimmer of the year on Myfitness). It’ll be sustainable for a few weeks or so but you’ll soon find it slows down to 1lb or 1.5 so don’t lose heart when that starts to happen. Basically you have to have a calorie deficit of 3,500 per pound you want to lose.

But anyway, when I do snack its on exercise days so I can afford to have something a bit heartier. I tend to have a Nakd bar or peanut trek bar (I divide it into thirds and have a third per snack). Also I really love Finn crisp breads - 2 of those with a bit of hummous. Also something like an oat milk chai does a lot to fill me up between meals too.

I am missing the gym so much. I was busy for much of Dec with Xmas parties and then I had a cold, then I was on holiday for two weeks (my gym is in the city I work in) and now that I am back at work, have a chest infection. I’ve lost shit loads of weight (the gym makes me heavier, but in a good way) and I look awful- untoned and lacking shape. Going to attempt a pilates class tomorrow despite pleurisy lungs, but really can’t wait to get back to lifting and spinning. I guess at least I’m not having to deal with the January gym situation.

Yeah I’m just not sure it’s going to be that beneficial for you until 2 months down the line of being mega strict on it. Pissing on sticks to see if you’re in ketosis yet. It would definitely mean no drinking, wouldn’t it?

The one thing i’ve found since going vegan that it’s massively leveled out my blood sugar so where I would normally crash heavily a few times a day, now I can keep quite a steady blood sugar. Might be worth looking into incorporating more whole grains? I try to only have brown stuff if i’m exercising a lot.

This. I used to get shaky and really hungry and dizzy every day. Almost immediately after going vegan it stopped.

I know I just need a week back at it, and I’ll feel back to normal again but it’s scary how quickly my body seems to lose lean muscle when I have a month off.

Once I’ve finished this cake I’ll be back in the literal saddle.

I’m really pleased for everyone feeling good during dry January but for some reason I always feel worse during my month of the booze. I’m starting to think I might be turning into my old man, a being entirely powered by snakebite. I’ve now had a fortnight off the sauce and I feel shocking most mornings.

I wish I could get aboard the no booze hype train, it looks nice on there.

if you’re normally boozing pretty heavily/regularly could that just be the withdrawal symptoms?

I wouldn’t have thought they’d last that long though would they? I normally feel crap right up to the end of Jan. Maybe it’s just that it coincides with the winter darkness and vitamin D deficiency or something.

i think it varies man depending on how much you’ve been boozing and at what regularity, the combination of that plus the darkness/time of year are probably all contributing though

well done on getting past the two week mark already too!

^ This @colossalhorse

This is a good thing. I had every intention of staying dry for January, but my main aim has been cutting back on the booze. Have had 5 evenings where I’ve had a couple of tins, but nothing overboard. So I’m classing this as a good start

I’m more a heavy binger than a regular drinker - generally only drink Fri and/or Sat but get through a hefty amount during that time. I do dry Jan every year to reset my tolerance as by xmas I’m putting away far too much in a session. Determined to keep it down this year though as regular 25+ unit 4am nights aren’t doing my health any good, physically or mentally.

i found that from the age of 30 onwards if i had a heavy session at the weekend (steady!) i’d still be feeling it a bit till around the Wednesday or Thursday of the following week, particularly in terms of sleep being disrupted or my ability to exercise

i guess it’s possible that if you’re binging like that every week it’d then take at least a few weeks for your body to totally reset itself?

Yeah sadly I’m getting the after effects till at least Wednesday. Which is why I’m determined to cut back - the hangovers I can deal with, the ensuing blues not so much.

I guess the only way to find out for sure would be to extend my non-boozing stint into February. I can’t promise I’m gonna do that though!
