Also these days my upper back looks like a sack of golfballs if I squeeze my shoulders in

I thought this for such a long time and I thought that if I exercised, I’ll be thin and it’s taken me a long time to come to terms with not wanting to be thin any more. I’m never going to be thin and that’s absolutely fine. I’ve got something else going on :muscle:

Also, this year making my own clothes has made me love my body 10 x more because I don’t have to try to squeeze into clothes in a shop which never fit my thighs.

Same. One of my goals when starting this thing was to be thin again, but just the feeling great and being able to do things I’ve not been able to do in years has meant it’s already paid for itself. I’m about 2 and a bit stone overweight now, but if I maintained what I’m doing now (and continuing to get in the gym during busy and stressful periods which is my biggest challenge), I’d be fine with not hitting my goal weight any time soon.

Also, the being able to fit into any clothes I want in the shop rather than having to pick the largest size they have is a nice feeling.

What would be a realistic weight lifting goal for the next year?
Currently I can lift my two little 2kg dumbells 20 times in 2 sets of 3.

I quite like the pudge on my arms but want to tone my back chub, strengthen my core whatever the f that means, and want to do weighted squats to get my butt nice and :peach:y.

Would v much appreciate any advice

@bluto recommended me this in September, and I basically went and started it that same evening, and it’s still my ‘bread and butter’ workout. It’s super simple to do, and he shows you proper form. You could do it in your living room. I’ve had some really awesome results doing it 3 times per week, and seems to be an awesome way to start lifting weights.

I also do the planks he talks about but doesn’t show for whatever reason btw.

I will try this out.
Thanks, mate!

maybe you know this already, but if you’ve not done them before, the lunges will absolutely destroy your legs the first few times you do them. like, not being able to walk properly for a few days type thing. just keep going with them.

Your core is basically the bit between tits and belt. Front and back.

Any full-body exercise will work your core and help strengthen it, so the squats you want to do will do that. To really work that mothertrunker, there are also lots of dedicated core exercises from planking to crunches to kettle bell twists and whatnot.

The video Prof has shared will work your core a great deal. Having a strong core helps with a lot of other exercise as it means you can keep form with heavier loads and longer sessions.

I’m far from an expert, but I work my core like a bitch so happy to share any advice.

Oh man, I LOVE that feeling!

I was kinda joking, I do know what my core is :joy:

Oh sorry, didn’t mean to patronise. In my defense, you said you didn’t know what it means and I didn’t know what it meant until I started working out regularly.

Can confirm. I’ve been lifting at an intermediate level for the best part of a decade now but had a go at some lunges for the first time a couple of days ago and GOOD GOD.

I’d up the weight and drop the reps - this just sounds like you’d be building up lactic acidosis rather than really pushing your muscles.

Can you afford a few sessions with a trainer? To get your form right and a bit of guidance

In terms of a goal, I wouldn’t set a numerical target on anything, but aim to continually progress in terms of weight/and/or number of reps.

I think the lunges gave me a hernia.

Good fun though.

Weighted walking lunges are my nemesis- if I don’t do them often enough I won’t be able to sit down for days. Apparently this doesn’t mean that they’re better for you though - just that you feel it more :woman_shrugging:

Change my pitch up

On a serious note though I find single-arm rows good for this

Thanks

they’re probably my favourite part of a workout now. do them 3 times a week and really like lunging around the gym. feels like one of those exercises that really helps other things i do like running.
