So, anybody enjoying their debut from last week? Thoroughly enjoyed their Waves and Banshee EPs, and despite the implication of them being a slow to deliver buzz band, this is feeling good on first listen. Surprised it’s not come up in the The Official Irish Music Thread.
Yeah I’m enjoying it. I liked a couple of songs from their EP a few years ago and then saw radio 6 were pushing them a little. Enjoyable album, don’t think it’s anything particularly groundbreaking but yeah liking it so far
Ha, yes, they’re no Gilla Band, but it’s an enjoyable listen when you want something tuneful!
Yeah, think Nightmares is a stand out for me at the moment but it’s just like you said a nice easy album. She’s got a lovely voice that compliments that whole sound they’re going for
I plan to listen, but do hate the name
Nice enough listen, would class them as ‘fine’
Often find myself quite surprised by which Irish bands are the ones to break through in the UK
I was looking forward to the album quite avidly after really enjoying their EPs, but its left me a little cold after a couple of (admittedly pretty distracted) listens. Seems like the vocals are higher in the mix and the lyrics more prominent than on the earlier releases, which usually isn’t an issue for me but in this case feels like it may be to the detriment of the songs.
Will give it a few more spins though before forming a firm opinion.
Anyone seen them live? Are they good?
Have heard of NewDad a bit over the last couple of years as they’ve had some big support slots and stuff, saw them play before Fontaines and Goat Girl at a Custom House Square gig in late summer 2021 (my first gig after covid) which I think was the first time I heard of them.
Have seen some decent press on them in Ireland though seen much more of it from the UK which is always interesting. Same with Sprints to some extent.
Seem like a nice enough bunch though so fair play to em.
Just reading an interview with NewDad where it says they’ve moved to London so that might explain it a bit as well
Think I came across them on DKFM’s facebook posts and then listened to the EPs, which are excellent. J* Whly then played them a couple of times, which I guess helped them. Alan Moulder’s done the mixing, and it feels Moulderish (bass still nice and audible).
Listening to the album now, it’s really nice. A bit background-y but enjoyable to let wash over you.
You’d never guess I used to write music reviews for actual publications, lmao
I thought your review was also really nice. Brief, but nice.
They didn’t tour too heavily here which is probably wise in a don’t get over-familiar too soon kind of way.
They are very young still and I’m impressed with how assured the songs are, really solid pop writing. They’re definitely for teenagers at the moment though (not a derogatory comment!)
Yes and yes, though both hometown shows in Galway with probably a more unique atmosphere.
Really like Julie’s solo album. Did not expect the link up with Space Dimension Controller lol
