Havenā€™t commented on the Lions game yet, just been quietly chuckling to myself for the 24 hours. Was quite surreal to wake up to. Watched the game and it made interesting viewing. I donā€™t think the Lions looked like world beaters by any means - they were iffy in the redzone, their returns team is appalling, the run defence is still gappy as fuck - but the main change is a key one: they actually had a competent running game. They could sustain drives, wind down the clock, take the pressure of Stafford, keep the defence freshā€¦ itā€™s huge. Even scratching together 150 yards makes all the difference.

I still donā€™t like their playoff chances, and I have a terrible feeling that theyā€™re really going to regret fucking the dog in the Jets game come crunch time, but at least they showed they could be competitive. Cowboys game should be interestingā€¦ donā€™t want to think about Green Bay yet.

Think that was more to do with the Patriots or getting some gremlins out of the Lionsā€™ system/experience from first couple of games?

I think the Lions D was definitely flattered by how inconsistent and out of sorts Brady and his receivers looked.

The run game I think is legit though. There were signs through both of the first two games, but falling behind and needing to catch up fast meant they had to abandon the run. If they can avoid falling behind again (no sure thing at all) then I think it will prove to be effective.

I like the sound of this, though I really hope itā€™s only a one a week type thing. So much content now.

Incidentally, itā€™s really bugging me how many shows are grouping all of their pods together, eg MMQB putting the ten things, Albert Breer, and another one all on the same feed (Iā€™ve now unsubscribed), and the ringer doing the same - I want to listen to Mays and Clark, but I canā€™t stand Lombardi, and I like Danny Kelly but I donā€™t need another fantasy podcast. The one I listen to is mainly because itā€™s fun.

It felt like there were an extraordinary amount of serious injuries in the opening weeks of last season, butā€¦

Do the more serious injuries have anything in common? Are they mainly impact or non-impact, are there any patterns in terms of surface, anything like that?

yeah iā€™m not a fan of the joint feed thing - iā€™m not gonna listen to a fantasy podcast but i really enjoy clark & mays (lombardi is an idiot but itā€™s entertaining) - the ringer do the same with channel 33 and itā€™s also really annoying. just have to go through and pick and choose rather than subscribe.

i actually seem to run out of podcasts but i listen to like 3-4 hours a day so thatā€™s just me i guess.

knees are just a timebomb waiting to happen basically

if darnold goes out with an injury i might give up on the season. will be awful if mahomes or mayfield get injured now as well.

As @badmanreturns says, knees are the killer. The game has got faster, huge men are turning on a sixpence at speed and knee ligaments just canā€™t take it. They also take about a year to repair, so they have a disproportional effect on teams/players.

The other one is concussions, but thatā€™s a long, deep rabbit hole to go down.

Whatā€™s really surprising is that there arenā€™t more injuries tbh. Given almost every play involves many players colliding at speed with other large menā€¦ but of course, nearly every player is injured, constantly, theyā€™re all dealing with pain that would put us in bed for weeks at a time, but thatā€™s their normal, they have every high-tech amenity to try and help them recover (and lots and lots of drugs!)

Earl Thomas on his way to Kansas for a 2019 second and (presumably nailed on) conditonal 2020 5th.

If anyoneā€™s enough to turn around an entire secondary itā€™s him, but Iā€™m sceptical. If heā€™s good enough to reduce it from 4 TDs to 2.5 a game, probably good enough I suppose, with their offence atm. Wonder how many years he has left in him.

depends what Iā€™m doing at work - simple/repetitive testing or manufacture and I churn through podcasts. Design or writing, and it has to be music.
