Nintendo Switch 2

Thought I’d give Air Riders another chance and it’s really clicked for me now. Not sure how long it will be addictive for but will probably buy it now ffs.

Hard for anything to look so obviously shit from 3 stills but here we are

Exactly my thoughts

I mean, that last image just looks like a couple of comicon cosplayers taking a nice walk in a very ordinary looking English field. Absolutely no fantasy element in the surroundings at all

I assume you’re talking about how with those colours Zelda and Link are clearly from completely different parts of the timeline?

Genuinely baffled as to what looks ‘obviously shit’ here?

link has too many polygons, it’s disrespectful to the source material for him not to have a big pointy nose

there’s no glowy ancient stuff anywhere

Did anyone pick up Kirby Air Riders?

I have it downloaded but work all day and am out tonight. Really enjoyed the play test and reviews are pretty positive, seems like way more content that I expected initially.

I got it but have only been able to have a couple of city trials on my lunch. I haven’t tried much else in it yet but I think I will get my money’s worth just from city trial.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I’d like an honest opinion on whether an upgrade to the Switch 2 is worth it for an 8 year old this xmas. He’s desperate for one but more just because it’s new than anything, I think. We’d probably get the Mario Kart option and maybe DK Bonanza to go with it. Otherwise, he’s likely to use it for his older games. We could stretch to get it but it’s a hefty price for a main pressie so wanted to make sure he’s going to love it! Any opinions greatly appreciated - thanks!

Others with kids that age can probably offer better advice than me tbf.

Speaking personally I’ve not really played it enough to justify what was a daft impulse buy, but I’m sure I will in the long run. That’s very much a me thing as opposed to any faults with it.

If he’s the type to sink hundreds of hours into those one or two games, as I did on the N64 at that age, it might be worth it. The step up in hardware and graphics is pretty impressive. Ive not at all got to grips with DK but others seem to love it and Mario Kart is loads of fun to explore.

Also another added expense potentially if not got already, but the GameCube and Luigi’s Mansion/Wind Waker might be an added bonus if those don’t seem too ancient to him :older_man:

Lots of other factors to consider too of course and depends how long interest in the games will last for him but it is what Nintendo will be releasing games on for the next 7 years or so probably, and it’s more likely to go up in price in the future rather than down.

In which case it’s probably not worth it.

It’s a great console for the handful of new games available and the improvements on some older titles, but unless your kid is super eager to play Donkey Kong Bananza or the new Mario Kart you may as well wait a bit until more games are available and/or prices are better.

Hard to say. If it’s looked after, it’ll last for a good 6+ years and will stand them well into their teens. It does make older games run better (e.g. if he plays Minecraft, it’ll go from a pretty jerky framerate to smooth) and the quality of the hardware is generally higher… the tech nerds have their quibbles (and not all of them are outlandish) but for an 8 year old the larger screen and faster load times will feel like they’re making a real difference.

Mario Kart World is gonna be best with friends for him to play with, but I’d imagine he’ll get value from the new modes and tracks if he’s enjoying MK8 on Switch and Donkey Kong’s probably the best Nintendo release in the last 2 years.

Couple of things to be aware of are is it’s a little heavier and larger than the old console - @Peanutbuttertoast might have thoughts on this - and the battery life isn’t as good (although how much shorter also depends on which type of Switch you have and how old/well used it is)

Weight-wise R doesn’t seem to have a problem. I haven’t played it much totally handheld because the in built-in stand for table top mode is so much sturdier I just do detatched joycons. Speakong of which, the Switch 2 joycons are so much more comfortable to hold I don’t get hand cramps within five minutes.

Whether worth getting for an 8yo really depends on just how enthusiastic they are for games on it. You really can pour a whole lot of hours into Mario Kart World or DK Bananza alone that could make it worth it, and both on easier modes have been about the right challenge level for R who is 9 (DK they’ve got to the big boss and I haven’t helped them once). Better loading times etc on old games is an improvement and some specific games you’ve got extra stuff if they are ones played - Kirby and the Forgotten Land DLC, Pikmin 4 has some new modes.

We’ve been getting a lot out of it, but milage definitely varies

Actually might be worth mentioning on here which games he most enjoys now @leskiv - we can probably guide on how much benefit he’ll see on those.

Thanks all, I really appreciate it.
He has a ton of games now: Minecraft, Zelda and Tony Hawk being his faves at the moment. But he has Animal Crossing, Plants V Zombies, Hogwarts Legacy, a bunch of the Lego ones (he’s also asked for the Skywalker Saga for xmas). He loves 1 2 Everbody Switch and Switch Sports as well. Quite varied but he has gotten good use out of the Switch in the 5 or so years he’s had it.
