Nintendo Switch - Super Smash Bros Direct 1st Nov

Yup. Not sure if you can play games from their 2D golden age and judge whether you’ll like this new console though

Newsflash: I play by my own rules

what does this mean?

“The first SKU will retail for £199.99 and that there won’t be a set retail pricing as UK manufacturers are not allowed to set RRP prices for consoles.”

Nintendo have some pretty shocking form with regards to built in storage. I wonder what the two options here are? 32gb and 128gb?

Nintendo got burnt for “price fixing” in Europe, so they stopped quoting a RRP to retailers a long time ago, they only give a trade price and allow retailers to pick the retail price themselves.

I think that it’s GAME’s price, not Nintendo’s - so it could be different at other retailers.

Today’s report, backed up by one previously used source and one new source who I have vetted thoroughly, is that UK specialist gaming retail chain GAME has been informed of the Nintendo Switch’s wholesale price to retailers, and is planning on selling their basic SKU (stock keeping unit) of the system in stores for £199.99.

It is important to note this is not a Nintendo set RRP (recommended retail price), as Nintendo do not set UK RRP prices for consoles. However, it is safe to assume this gives us a solid indication of the price the system will sell at nationwide.

sooo… how does this article know it’s gonna be £199, and what is a uk manufacturer??

I hate rumours so much

Like Hexagram said, it’s a leak from GAME that suggest that’s what they’re pricing it at (which also means that virtually everyone else will probably pitch it at the same level, give or take about a tenner.

Ignore the bit about RRP - people misinterpret the law and what Nintendo are up to there. Nintendo were burnt in the 90s for trying to stop retailers from buying stock in Eastern Europe and the UK and sell it in other parts of Western Europe to keep prices in places like Germany artifically high.

Part of Nintendo’s response was to stop selling an RRP so they couldn’t be accused of trying to force retailers to stick to it. That doesn’t mean you can’t set an RRP though (Sony and Microsoft do with their consoles), it’s just that Nintendo choose not to - setting just the trade price and allowing retailers to pick their markup themselves.

Interesting stuff. I’ll bet any amount of money that the pack in game is going to be Splatoon.

It’s time for a Hexapoll!

Which game will the Switch launch with?

  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • New 3D Super Mario game
  • Mario Kart (8 or 9)
  • Splatoon port
  • Super Smash Bros 4 port
  • Skyrim

Not Zelda. Wouldn’t surprise me if that ends up being a Q3 release, in which case they’ll probably want two other big first party titles along with Skyrim; from that list Splatoon & 3D Super Mario would be ideal, with MK a good second choice. Smash 4 feels less accessible than previous ones, so probably isn’t ideal for day one.

There’s a back to basics vibe to this so far, so launching with a new Mario game would fit into that. It sets out the stall for Nintendo Family Fun early and clearly - Nintendo consoles are the Mario machines after all.

Zelda looks awesome, but it isn’t the only adventure-y game out there by a long way - whereas Nintendo pretty much have the platform game scene sewn up. From a branding perspective, I can see that playing to strengths early on is a good idea, then expanding.

Smash 4 is a personal favourite (Kirby 4 lief), although it is a thing in esports, so a port would make sense at some point since Nintendo seem to have an eye on that. It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, though, true.

My vote is for wishful thinking

and I tell myself: I’m over you

Is it outside the realms of possibility there’ll be a Pokemon within the first year? It’s a big system seller, but obviously they’ll want Sun and Moon to come out and sell a load before they release a new one. The big highup GameFreak man said they’re working on a game for the Switch, I’d really love it if it was a Red and Blue sequel.

I guess a Pokemon Super Diamond and Mega Pearl remake is due in the next year or two and if Switch is the long term replacement for 3DS as well as Wii U then it’s logical. Can’t see a new generation so close to Sun/Moon for the reasons you give.

There hasn’t been a console switch mid-generation before, but it maybe Blood Diamond and BlackBerry Pearl will come out on Switch and 3DS?

Using a new game engine for Switch and existing S&M engine for 3DS, maybe - the same game twice, effectively. There are still tons of 3DSs out there, and they’re selling well because of Pokemon.

Then Gen VIII will likely be Switch only.

Whole heap of rumours this week. Kinda sad we seemingly know so much about it in some respects…

Zelda will launch later in 2017 due to testing and localisation. But a new 3D Mario in which you explore more linear, 3D worlds is done and ready to ship day one. Works as a two player game too.

Pokemon Stars in development which will work with Sun & Moon save but be the first, dedicated home console Pokemon title in 20 years. Due late 2017.

Skyrim remastered is a launch title but that was held back from being announced to not impact on PS4 / Xbox One sales. Ubisoft working on a Rabbids / Mario RPG crossover.

Mario Kart will be an updated version of the Wii U version but with loads of new characters, tracks and a reworked battle mode. Smash supposedly being treated similarly. Splatoon will come bundled with the console in a push to make it a big esports title and support local network multiplayer.

Wave Race trademark just got registered this month interestingly. Sakurai admits he’s working on a new title too…

Gonna buy one in April fo sho

This combined with the price rumours is all very positive. Feeling an awful lot like a day one purchase to me.
