part of the appeal maybe that they never got beyond level 3 of a classic game so want to see level 7?

I dunno… I never got to the end of ecco the dolphin but don’t want to try again now tbh

that said… THPS2 or 3 was never been bettered by skate or wahetver came next so Id like to play that again… :open_mouth:

I never got out of the opening pond in Echo the Dolphin. Frankly, I’m not sure it’s possible and everyone’s in on a huge ploy to trick me.

 I managed that… and got I think… quite far… back to the prehistoric bits and stuff… but yeah… there was cheat code going round where you skipped to the last level which was a scrolling screen inside a spaceship or something.

Depends in part on the game and in part on preferences.

The fact that the moveset in SMB3 is so basic is part of the appeal for me - can’t wall jump, can’t double jump, can’t stomp jump, cant reverse flip etc. The soundtrack stands the test of time, the graphics less so (would be interested to see the All Stars version)

Also as said above… I never got further than World 2-4 as I only ever played it in the Early Learning Centre in Fareham’s shopping centre, so being able to see the whole game appeals as well.

Totally get what you say though… I’m not desperate for these games, they’re just a bonus.

Here ye go:

FWIW I prefer the NES version.

In terms of all the emulation everyones going on about if you really want I 'll send you a link on how to do it and use retroarch on Switch. Havent done it myself yet but can 100% see the appeal of having the combo of Switch + all the new games, including best Mario Kart, Mario 3d, Zelda etc in years, PLUS all the great indies coming to Switch PLUS being able to play every retro console and game via retroarch.
Without using emulation myself the idea already appeals to me which is why Im loving playing the old Mario games, Okami and in future FF7 on this thing. All my old consoles and games and even mini nes and snes are gathering dust so of course itd be great to whack an sd card into the switch and be able to play any game ive ever purchased on one awesome platform.

End rant.

Ohhhhh, this explains why I remember SMB3 being more colourful than it is now.

reckon @anon29812515 must have beaten Dead Cells on the hardest difficulty by now!

Gave up on that. I just play it on the normal setting. I have a sickness and I need help. Just loving all the different builds and just going round and round.

Need to stop and start Hollow Knight.

Aaarrggghh.

I’m trying the second difficulty but it’s a real fucker only having health refills every other level.

I did that one really easily for some reason. Like second or third go. But the third one you have NO REFILLS and fuck me it’s tough. Think I got to the Hand of the King once but no chance.

The hardest one (I have read) you get infected with every single hit. Lord a mercy!

Retro gaming is almost pure nostalgia. I was out of the console game for a long time (since the PS3) but since then the indie gaming scene took over and basically made better versions of those games that wouldn’t have been possible back then. Now it’s all a bit pointless, with the exception of a handful of the real classics (I’d still urge people to play the likes of Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, FFVI etc. if they hadn’t).

he’s an absolute dead cells monster, man.

Is there a way to cloak my shame? So that it says I am playing something else?

Do you know what, Dead Cells fans? I still haven’t got the fucking shovel blueprint and I still can’t be arsed to do the bell ringing one.

I did that one by accident. What are the odds.

no refills?!

Ah fuck that.

You get a couple of those vials that give you one hit of the bottle (not refill the whole thing) and that is it. Plus harder bad guys immediately. Like those inquisitors firing those magic things at you straight away.

hmm not sure, there’s something to be said for pure genre games i.e lacking constant RPG progression and loot. Most indies now are trying to do a bit of everything.

Here’s a fun and not at all definitive list of classics that still hold up/haven’t been bettered:

SMB3
SMWorld
Shining Force 2
Streets of Rage 2
Sonic 2
Columns
FFVI
Flashback
Chaos: Battle of the Wizards
Master of Magic
Starcraft 1
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
MGS1
FFVII

you can tell I never owned an N64 but definitely put Ocarina of Time on there as it still feels great to play and is structured really well

also part of the fun for me with retro games is appreciating the artistry and solutions within constrained and weak systems to create cool effects & levels etc.

These days a PC can pretty much do anything you want for any 2d game or classic genre so part of that feeling is lost.
